To do MedEntry or not next year?

Variety of evaluations (both positive and negative) about doing MedEntry.

So do you guys think I should try it out? Or should I just buy the ACER papers off the website and do them? :|

Really at a loss.. D: UMAT is the bane of every aspiring med student's life.

You cant really improve much on the UMAT in my opinion, especially on section 2 and 1 to a lesser degree.

3 will show the most improvement, they have a handy section 3 generator but im sure you can get puzzles of a similar degree elsewhere.

I honestly dont think it improve my score that much (but i didnt put it to a huge use)

Others may differ, thats my opinion anyway.

I know that I don't regret doing Medentry, because it did sort of help me.

But I guess it depends on what you're good at.

I didn't really improve at all in Sections 1 and 2, and I've heard that you can improve on Section 3 by doing Mensa stuff.

Also, the results you get from their exams are in no way indicative of how well you do on the actual UMAT exam.

Hope that helped somewhat

I never did it (or any other course) and didn't feel I was disadvantaged at all. If you (or your parents) can afford the few hundred dollars then it can only help...but I doubt it's a significant benefit.

I didn't do Medentry (or anything similar) and got the UMAT score that I wanted.
I can't justify spending that sort of money on an aptitude test, regardless of its influence.
If you can afford it then go for it, otherwise just do the ACER paper that comes with your registration.

Mmmm true, I believe MedEntry would help you with S3 as you would be subject to more and more images and thus more and more patterns; both gradually and naturally gaining an increase in detection of these such patterns. However, regarding the other sections of the test, many people on the forum (and also in real life) have believed that MedEntry has been extremely misleading and untrue in many aspects. Thus I really am at a loss to decide whether or not I should do MedEntry next year. Hmmm....

There are more than enough free resources available. I found something like 10 trial exams online (didn't do them all) and ended up with a 95%ile. From what I hear, the lectures are totally useless and since there are already sufficient resources out there, I don't see the point of spending $300+ on medentry.

Anecdotally, everyone I know who winged the umat did better by ~10%iles than those who prepared using medentry. I only know about 20 people who did it and so my sample is obviously flawed.
UMAT tuition (95/96%iles, 100%iles in S1/S3 between us): http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,33968.0.html

I don't really know the benefit of doing MedEntry. I did it and still got lower than the person (who didn't do it) I wanted to beat lol.

I think the lecture is mainly useless. However, personally I found the drills/practice exams useful. Just spend money to use the LMS and make the most of it. It helped me in terms of knowing what the questions may look like, and gave me a sense of timing, even if it did not really noticeably 'improve' my abilities..

The percentiles are pretty out though.. I was getting 40 percentiles constantly leading up to the test.. then surprisingly much, much better on the real thing (A lot to do with luck though).

Ultimately the decision comes to how much you value your money. It's quite simple from how I see it. First, choose if you want to do a prep course. All these people who did prep courses saying that they were beaten by their friends who didn't do them are irrelevant really. We all know the UMAT is a test mainly of natural ability, so it's irrelevant comparing against others. Instead, the question they should've been answering is whether they improved after having done them. I'm pretty sure the answer to that should be yes, at least for section 3 and in my opinion, also section 1. I agree with the consensus that section 2 is unable to be studied, and even if you do go to a prep course, don't even waste your time trying to study it. For those who said studying didn't help them whatsoever, then obviously they've been using the material wrong. I'm not saying these people are idiots since it's easy to fall into that trap. The UMAT is a very difficult test to study for since it's quite conceptual in the way you need to approach it. Practice involves altering one's own thought processes and most people aren't familiar with this. I get the feeling most people study it like they do with VCE trial exams and try and just read solutions, taking in the actual steps done rather than the thought processes involved in knowing what steps to do. The solutions will tell you the steps involved in the question, but it's up to you to think about the solution to getting to the solutions - this is where most will struggle.

Next however is that you have to realise that although prep courses are going to make you improve, the question of how much it can is one that's difficult to answer. As I said above, I'm quite certain that section 1 and 3 can be improved through study and the difference mainly comes down to your own skill at studying as I've described above. Next though, here's where you have to think about how much the UMAT (and its sequelae, i.e. Med) actually means to you. When you're talking about using the UMAT to get into Med, every point matters really. You're going to be ranked on it so from my perspective at least, an extra few percentile is something I'd definitely pay for. In my case however, I'm pretty sure it was more than just a few percentile anyway having scored 100%ile in section 3 - a feat I doubt I could've gotten anywhere near if I hadn't prepared.

Lastly is well, which prep course to choose. Well, out of MedEntry and NIE, I'm undecided. Haven't had much experience with NIE other than a few hours with their books. I felt NIE wasn't challenging enough and didn't mimic the structure of the real UMAT very well, but neither does MedEntry in that regard. MedEntry is probably overly difficult in fact. The hardcopies given by NIE are a big bonus though. Still, those who have done both are probably in a better place to comment.

Thank you so much for the reply Shinny, it is greatly appreciated. I will probably end up doing a prep course next year as I really, would do anything to get into Med. Just wondering, you did enrol into MedEntry right?

Mmmm, been reading up a lot and a variety of people say that NIE is significantly better than MedEntry as a med prep course. And others have also recommended to do a lot of MENSA/IQ games/quiz questions etc haha, what are your thoughts on this? :)
