Selection should be between the COACHES + maybe consult the captain.

Not consulting the captain, that would show that the captain does not have full faith in each and every member of his team, not good for team spirit, belief, etc. A captain favouring certain players over others would cause separations and divisions in the team.

Anyone who would have a bias shouldn't be captain in the first place, this isn't under 16's.
The captain should have the teams best interests in mind. Ultimately, R.P knows the tactics he wishes to employ. Not many people notice this but in the Warne/McGrath era R.P played a great role with his tactics in achieving victory.

true, but i dont think it would be so much an issue for the team, but i reckon if ponting made a call and a few people didnt agree with it or something, it would get blown up by you guessed it the media. personallly i think they cause more trouble for the team then the actual cricketers do!

I agree with bomb on this issue. Ponting knows his team the best - plays with them throughout the summer. Even if Ponting makes a few calls which some people disagree, the onus is on Ponting to show that the players he chooses will perform on the day. As what has already been said, the team selection should be decided by the coach(es) and the captain of the team. I don't see the point of having selectors who rarely see players on a day-to-day basis - training, playing etc.

I personally don't care who's in the team - it doesn't need to be the "big" names - anyone in form will do. As long as we can get a team that is settled and stable (without the constant rotation of players), then results may start to go our way.

Pity I'm not in regular contact with my Australian sport-conscious friends, so I can't bag them :P

Just for what is above, does Ponting need the added pressures of being a selector as well as a captain? Already we can see the pressures of being captain alone on the man are pretty high and I think his struggling form is showing that. If anything, he needs less duties to focus more on his game and be the great batmen he is well known for.

Should be less pressure. You have the confidence of knowing you got the best 11 to execute your strategy.

Fair enough then. But I doubt the ACB will approve, seems worth the risk though (I now understand your point and also agree).
