Theres this HP pavillion laptop dv6-3131TX, i think its the new one comes in a black matte color. Its around the 1200$ price range but its got strong performance for its price.
- 1 GB vidcard (ATI)
- i5 2.6 processor
- 1 GB HD
- 4 GB memory DD3
*kinda bulky tho. if entertainment and editing is your thing this is the right one.
As the owner of a HP Pavillion laptop, I strongly advise against this.
Overall they have good specs if you're looking for a pseudo desktop computer.
I bought my HP laptop because I was going to live overseas and I wanted a performance laptop I could keep in my dorm room (a "desktop computer" without the giant box, basically). For me, it has fulfilled this purpose and I feel it was a good purchase. Though given the choice, I won't buy another HP laptop.
In regards to the OP's needs, they're quite unsuitable for university:
1. They're bulky and heavy.
2. It's a pretty good laptop in terms of performance given the price, but this comes at the trade-off of poor battery life. Battery life was about 3-4 hours when I first bought my laptop, but it goes downhill quite quickly after about the 1yr mark. You can use a larger battery instead of the standard one, but they're heavy and because they're bulky they prop up the back of your laptop. Ironically, the larger battery works for me because I need to prop up my laptop anyway in dealing with with problem 3.
3. They have
serious overheating issues. The fan goes fking spastic, the laptop is hot to the touch, and poor design in terms of fan placement means you have to physically prop your laptop up on a book or something so that the fan gets air access and your laptop doesn't
explode overheat within 5min of turning it on. I've been very proactive in always keeps the fan clear externally in terms of daily use and maintenance with compressed air, and I think this is the only thing that hasn't killed my laptop (I've read a lot of stories online about hardware failure and such related to overheating equipment specifically in regards to the HP Pavillion). However, you can't open your laptop and clean the fan internally without voiding the warranty on it AND to top it off they've got the hardest-to-reach fans imagineble. You literally have to gut your entire laptop to get to the fan. It's like they're trying to fk with you by intentionally designing laptops that overheat but you can't clean.
TL;DR don't buy a HP laptop for university.
