This makes me happy. However, the stuff going on in Myanmar/Burma at the moment is terribly disturbing.

The real question is whether she is able to bring down the military Junta. 1990 showed us that she won't be able to do it by democratic means (the laughable constitution guarantees a de-facto majority for the ruling party). I'm not sure what international pressure can do. Burma is already isolated as is. . .
The only to overthrow the ruling party would be a coup-de-etat or civil war. Hopefully everything works out peacefully, however a smooth transition is never guaranteed.

I think the UN should step in and hold a re-election with Aung Suu Kyi present as a political force. Hopefully she stays 'free' for longer than last time, Burma needs her.

ya, because the UN is actually competent enough to do that.

I lost my faith in the UN as a helpful institution after
1) They stood by and watched the Srebrenica massacre
2) They failed to prevent the militarization of the Sinai by Nasser in the lead up to the 6 day war
3) Iran was elected to the UN Women's Rights Commission
4) Lybia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia were given exclusive membership to the UN Human Rights council
5) A third-world/Arab Lobby has an instant majority in the General assembly. You want a law proclaiming the world flat? OK. 79 In favour, 22 Against, 8 Abstentions
6) UN General Assembly Resolution 3379 -1975 "Zionism Is Racism"
7) Every time the Secretary general notes that something is "deeply regrettable ... . "

THis is just a partial list off the top of my head. I have no doubt that the Un will end up as it's predecessor 'The League of Nations" - disbanded in the aftermath on the next major war it fails to prevents once again.

What do you think about the 5 nations with veto powers in the UN security council?

Oh and lol @

Obviously China and the US holds more weight than El Salvador or Equatorial Guinea. Just by virtue of the fact that some countries are more powerful than others, the veto powers make sense. In an ideal world every country would hold the same influence and decide for themselves on each resolution - rather than siding with interest partners. Obviously this isn't the case.

If it were up to me, a new multi-national organization should be formed like the UN comprising only of democratic countries.
