GAMSAT Questions
« on: November 18, 2010, 12:23:33 am »

There appears to be no GAMSAT board here (hint enwiabe :P) so I thought here would be the best place to ask...

How should I go about preparing for the GAMSAT?

I know it is a long time away, but I would love nothing more than to do well the first time so there is less pressure on me to get a high score in the final year.

I am planning on doing Biomed next year, and am somewhat concerned about the physics which will be in the GAMSAT.

Will physics for biomedicine be sufficient, or should I buy some kind of textbook and learn from that?  I did Unit 1/2 physics, but I have already forgotten a lot of it, and reading around, although ACER says Year 12 physics is the standard, I have read that many students say that uni physics prepares you better.

Also, I honestly have no idea what section 1 and 2 are about.  How do I familiarise myself with these topics and study/test/prepare myself for them?

Are the writing tasks similar to the GAT?

And ever since I gave up humanities at the end of year 10, I have absolutely no idea in this area.

Would really like to start early and space things out, rather than cram.  Plus I have a whole 3 and a half months of nothing planned, so I may as well start.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, anyone selling GAMSAT material please PM me, I am interested in purchasing!

Thanks.

haha.  i figure that is is not really that far away ~15 months, and there is a lot to study for.

i am considering whether or not to buy this so I can at least knock off all of the theory during summer, rather than wait to learn it all next year...

it seems kinda pricey though.

Hmm well you might not need to! Isn't there that 99+ guarantee into graduate med? I have NO idea whether or not it's still valid next year though, but if it is you probably won't need to do the GAMSAT because you look set to get over 99. So I wouldn't purchase anything just yet. Need to wait till Dec 13th to decide. Maybe email the biomed dept to ask about that rule, I remember at the open day the girl I talked to was saying she didn't have to do the GAMSAT because she'd gotten over 99. And she didn't say anything about it removed. But there's a big chance something like that would be due to popularity unfortunately :(

99.9 for CSP place.

99.00 or over for guaranteed place, but it might be full fee..

Russ will probably clear this up though, but that's what I roughly remember from what she said.

nah, i checked that out already haha.  it is a 99.9 guarantee, so I am screwed.

I am seriously starting to doubt whether or not I will even get 99+ anymore.

i know prep courses (particularaly after MedEntry) are kind of misleading, but at least with this one it is on hardcopy so I can sell it.  and it seems to teach theory stuff, unlike MedEntry who sell you their bs advice which is no help.

also, i like visual learning haha...

might have to see if my father wil go half with me :D

edit:  and I can barely afford this, how am I supposed to be able to pay for a FFP lol

http://www.medstudentsonline.com.au/showthread.php?t=10188  (3rd post down)

you only get a shot at one uni per year in the whole country for grad med.  fml.

this just keeps on getting better.

if i do the umat next year and do okay, can i ditch my biomed degree for mbbs in 2012 or is that against the rules?  (IIRC it is)

Scroll down to "Doctor of Medicine". That should cheer you up. The girl was right! haha. Now all we need is confirmation from Russ and it will be legit.

If i want to pay $250k+ then I just could have gone to Bond though haha.  It is 99.9 for CSP.

I remember the guy from the NIE stand was saying MBBS doesn't accept people who are transferring. So according to him, no that is "against the rules of Monash".

haha at least it's guaranteed? Takes the pressure off somewhat. You could get a loan from the bank or something? haha. You can put your efforts into earning heaps of money instead of GAMSAT prep at least haha.

lmao, my dad got pissed because I wasted like $200 applying to all of the universities in Aus, they are just gonna love me taking out a gigantic loan...

can someone please confirm this.  I believe this is what I need to do.
-sit the GAMSAT and UMAT in 2012 and 2013
-then I can get an interview at one grad med school for 2014 entry, and as many interviews as a I want for non standard undergrad entry in 2014?  (provided my scores and GPA are good enough)

is this right?

@ stonecold, non standard applicants (ie those who have started/finished a uni degree) are accepted at JCU, UWS, UNCLE, UTAS (my hopes are here as their UMAT cutoff for CSP is around 90 for non standards LOL) and UNSW (but they take year 12 results into account).

Also, for grad med, if you get rejected from the first of your 3 preferences, they will pass your interview score on to lower prefs and you may be able to get an offer from them instead. I'd also really recommend against a FFP due to internship concerns. If you're happy to take one it'd be more financially viable just to go to bond, really.

Realise if you get 99+ and go through melbourne its very unlikely you will get an offer since its not really guaranteed, they will have too many people who will apply under it than there are spots available for guarantees in full, you still would do GAMSAT for chance to CSP due to internship issues after obtaining the full-fee... Not worth it.

Don't start preparing now lawwwwl, do heaps of over next summer or breaks next year, your first shot should be a practice round then real one study harder if you need to at your poorer sections for entry that year.
