Girl driven to appeal to the internet for eating disorder treatment

This girl can't pay for treatment (and her insurance won't pay) and therefore needs to ask the internet for money for it. What do you think of this?

I'm not sure whats sadder: The fact that only rich people can afford to get help for their problems or the fact that sick people have to turn to strangers on the internet to get help.

That is a very emotional piece, and I'm sure she is telling the truth, but something doesn't add up:

The hope (and belief of Lisa Kantor) is that if I am able to remain in treatment for the duration of the appeal process, UBH will be ordered to reimburse us - and not only that, but ordered to cover the length of time in treatment that is being recommended for me.

Yet she doesn't offer the generous donors to refund them should she be reimbursed?

If this did not happen I would hopefully be able to make do with the treatment I did receieve and recover - not only saving my life, but going on to do the things I want to do with my life and being present in the world. I would then be in a place where I could work, and if necessary, eventually take out loans. I would do my absolute best to pay anyone who was able to help out back in as timely and efficient a fashion as possible, but I do have to acknowledge that this would probably take many years.

In the quest for information, do you make the cumbersome trip to your library, or do you rely on wikipedia (i.e. "strangers on the internet") to satisfy your thirst for knowledge?

The two things don't really compare. Knowledge is (somewhat) free and easy to obtain, money is a different ballpark.

I know someone who's worked in one of the private places that 'treat' eating disorders and the like. From what I've heard, so don't quote me on this, it's not very complicated... they just sit down and all but force the people to eat. Just being encouraging and distracting them from what they're doing - eating.

I'm sure there is a theraputic aspect to it as well. On the page, she mentions doing group therapy a few times a day and individual therapy a few times a week. Though, I do imagine that getting people to eat is pretty key, or else they're in danger of dying from starvation.

There has to be a therapeutic aspect to the treatment or else the people with this ailment will just go right back and relapse again.
