Chik Fuk Yu Joe
Ho-Suk Lee
Batman Bin Suparman

^^^
Awesomest names ever ('sides funkhouser).

My high school (international/private) had almost 50% Chinese from China. And they all had the most common names: Mark, Tony, James, Shane, Jack, Tom, Harry. Probably it would be easier for us to remember their names.

No teacher would like to try reading a class roll full of Chinese names....
Again, my Japanese seminar.

Teacher (reading out the roll):
chinese name
chinese name
chinese name
jack
chinese name
chinese name
chinese name
mike
etc

I'd like to clarify the funkhouser thing. It's an actual name. I saw it on the news (some kind of news on SBS). He's the mayor of Kansas.

(could you imagine having that as your real surname? it would be SO awesome.)

Yeah, I really don't understand why Asians do that. It's as if they are ashamed of their culture. At uni they ask me to call the names like Fred, Gabriel, John etc :/

Its just easier for other people and the fact that no one really pronounces it correctly

Exactly. It's got nothing to do with being ashamed. It's about practicality. For instance, I met a girl who said her name was Cathy, and I met a guy whose name I couldn't pronounce. Guess who's name I remembered. Guess who I refer to by a name instead of 'you over there'.

If I introduced myself to you as Maoyuan Liu, what would your reaction be?

"Whhaaaaa?"

And then consider my reaction when I hear your attempt of 'May-ou-eww-an Lee-eww' (which is completely wrong btw).

But luckily, most people can pronounce 'Mao' due to my infamous alternate ego, otherwise I would have been 'Chris' or 'Peter'.

Thank god, Chairmann Chris just isn't the same ... though, yay alliteration!

One of my friends had to kind of do the opposite. He has a Western name and chose an 'Eastern' name when he was in Taiwan over the summer uni break (hi father is a diplomat). I have no idea what name he chose, but I think it had a similar meaning to his actual name.

I think a lot of the time its just kind of the first western name they hear, or they'll ask someone who knows western names.

Or they just name their child david or kevin

there are so many asian davids and kevins
