I think its obvious that people love the Xgangers but now that they are old, they need something new. So, they do the exact same thing but as an afterthought, add 'btw this is for charity, so please dont defriend me!'

Its a bit odd, but very few people on my list did it and really, no harm done.

Great post ninwa! I agree with you so much. This is like the Seinfeld episode where Kramer doesn't want to wear the cancer ribbon and is abused by the crowd even though he is still supporting the cause.

Or like after the Haiti earthquake, how some Hollywood big-hitters were allegedly wearing ribbons to indicate their "awareness" of the disaster.

@Conbob - thanks for throwing up all these excellent reads/views. Would love to have a look at things, but I have so little time.

It's good that not all people are easily fooled by supposed acts of good will.

Status from Stacy:
Attention!!!!!!Justreported that the group that started the 'post' about changingyourprofile picture to a cartooncharacter is actually a pedophilegroup thatis doing this because it is easier to get accepted 'friendrequests'!!!Please re-post [sic]

/thread? :)

Came up on my wall too:

ATTENTION:The group asking everyone to change their profile pictures to their favorite cartoon character is actually a group of pedophiles. They are doing it because kids will accept their friend request faster if they see a cartoon picture. It has nothing to do with supporting child abuse and ...violence, IT'S ON TONIGHT'S NEWS. Copy and paste this to your status, let everyone know

Of course if enough people believe something it eventually becomes the 'truth'

Harm caused = a bunch of self-satisfied people who walk away from their computers and feel like they did something for the children, thereby allaying their conscience sufficiently to remove the need to actually do some useful, e.g. donate to a charity.
THIS.

Some of the comments on there are ridiculous:

I agree 100%!!! I got a reply from some one and this was my reply!!! I was just posting what every one else said to post because they have spoken about it on tv from what I have been told. As to whether or not it is true or not I dont know, but I for sure wouldnt take the chance of not posting it and warning… people if that may have been the case.. I have a 10 month old and I would want someone to warn me as well just in case because in all honesty we do have a lot of sicko’s out there that would do some crazy stuff like that. So to be on the safe side, I did what the status said and that is to repost it. I guess we shall see becuase they say it is suppose to be on the news tonight..I as well feel no shame about copying and pasting something that could be a HUGE POSSIBILITY!!!

As soon as someone says "pedophile" alarm bells start ringing and people seem ready to engage in open hatred of something not even there. I could see this person taking part in an angry mob and a lynching of an innocent person.

That person just screams stupid though:

Who posts something just because someone told someone else it was TV.

Also they sound 13 years old....

That comment wasn't directed at you sorry if it came across that way D: It's directed at people who just mindlessly repost crap they heard from someone else who heard it from someone else who heard it from someone else etc.

This is perhaps proof that awareness should be raised in order to purge humanity of stupidity.
