If you ban it, Chavi and yitzi will never post again.

Wait, that's not the point of this idea?

If you make the forum hidden (good idea), don't mention it at all or you'll get people gravitating there just to see what it's all about

lol +1 Burberry

i think a religion sub-forum would only breed more hate and tension. It wouldnt be wise.

For example users could post as much biased shit they wished that criticizes certain religions without being attacked as harshly by other members as they have posted in an appropriate forum. However as religious debates are being constantly surfaced in the forums we have at the moment (that are not essentially dedicated to religion) - such as politics and rants/debates - people feel more reluctant to continuously post religious shit in there.

I feel this to be the case as if we already had a religion sub-forum taiga wouldnt have raised this point!!!

I think there should be a board which is hidden until you reach a certain number of posts.  This is where contentious issues should be discussed.  Threads and replies on this board should not appear down the bottom in updated threads.

People should have to go and look for it.

I agree with taiga that this ranting/flaming is tarnishing the reputation of the site, as it does not promote a very friendly and welcoming nature.

Personally, I haven't noticed this at all... But if it exists I agree that it's not desirable. I like most of the suggestions proposed here. As long as there is a freedom of respectful and reasoned debate :)

All your suggestions have been excellent and has led me to the informed decision that:

After results on Monday a new board will be created entitled "Religion". It will NOT be a free for all. Posting an ad-hominem in that board will be insta-bannable for 2 days (more for repeat offenders). The board's posts will not show up in "Recent Posts". Any and all religious conversations will take place there, and those who derail topics to religious debates elsewhere in the forum will warned once and then banned (repeat offenders banned for longer and longer).

Well yeah I was going to suggest a postcount requirement. The problem with the threads are not trolls, but the occasional insulting, misguided views which when expressed essentially impede on the rights of others.

Then I thought that would make it seem like we were trying to hide something, which in essence, we would be.

I think a religion board will go part of the way to addressing the issue, but a stricter watch on discussion (which can be difficult) would be ideal.

2 questions:

What exactly is ad-hominem? I googled it once and couldn't find a clear explanation. Also i'd like to know VNs definition of it as its the only place i've heard it come up (and most of my posts in any religious topic aren't exactly choc-full of evidence)

What if religion is relevant to a topic but not a focal point; such as the reinstatement of capital punishment (should it ever arise)?

PWOT are actually a great forum, I think the religion forum rules should kind of be based on their "We saved Hitler's Brain" ones, which is the PWOT place for debates etc.

bad idea. Rant/News covers everything. The religion section will never be used, because most heated debates start off as a news item.

It will be quite obvious when a news item will diverge into a religious debate, and therefore it should be posted into the Religion section.

Simple really.

ad-hominem is like a personal attack in a debate, straying from the actual topic *i think*

it's also every VN debater's favorite word.

If it's a religion-based news item, it will go in Religion.

If the discussion derails, split topic, move to Religion and place bans as appropriate.
