After a while you'll notice that you dont read words such as 'the, is ' etc but you concentrate on the key words of the sentence as you can usually deduce the meaning of the sentence from reading those words.

On speed reading, there are cheap courses one can do to improve it. They run at my school once a year (don't remember the name of it though).

I did their course in year 9 at mlc and found it really useful. They even had a reading accelerator machine!

But I guess the trick with speed reading is lots of practice and focus. You have to focus on reading quickly by only concentrating on a group of words and then gliding your eyes smoothly across each sentence. If you lose focus tell yourself to keep moving and don't worry about comprehension as it comes easily the faster you read. It might sound like an oxymoron but it's true.
