I think fund-raisers is a good start.
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.
-Martin Niemoller, a german pastor

I wonder if it would be feasible for the VN community to get together to sponsor a child or something

That idea is made of win.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

I suspect there will be a  lack of people who have access to bank accounts to transfer online funds. That would be me about 6 months ago...

How about a VN group initiative to do some charity work, I know there are a bunch of medicine aspiring nerds who have nothing to write on their CV, and not alot to say in an interview (aside from probably music). It would get them something useful, whilst getting something done for the community.

I'm hopping on board this free tutoring thing for financially disadvantaged kids, got one person who seems genuine that's happy to accept it :)

Bumping this back up.

Talked to ninwa a bit about it, something education based is the best. At this moment ideas are what we want!

Since I have little to nothing to do during the holidays, I would gladly assist with any community based work. I've helped out a bit with the Sunshine Lions before.

Y'know, you could always talk to libraries. There's a homework group in my local library where kiddies are helped with their study

As VN is now part of AtarN, we can probably organize a national movement between the states where AtarN members can contribute to organizations like Amnesty International, World Vision etc.

You just have to plan and co-ordinate it between the individual boards, get the poeple togehter under one initiative and go for it.

Good idea!

Yes that is a good way of bringing the boards together, but before we do a national one, we should maybe attempt organising a Victoria one first :)

I think the best thing to do first is try organising a once off donation, something that will not require continuous payment?

Hmm, our talents lie in our ability to write. We have some very good writers here!! I believe we should firstly gear up and we can probably generate public attention on some things. So this would be like a student activist group, only across a VN board.

With regards to your Donations, i believe you could talk to many of our excellent tutors who advertise here and perhaps get them to endorse some of their earnings to charity :)?

Haha.

Yes Burberry!

You can start a student activist group from VN and slowly work your way up. I'm sure many of us would help out in charity functions but you have to attract the people. It coudl get very big but yes, humble beginnings on an internet board :)

Best of luck

Our writing talents could be put to good use with Amnesty international, writing letters pleading for pardons. I doubt everyone here is as enthusiastic about this as some unfortunately so this may not work that well!

EDIT: Have a look.

Some of the issues may be good topics for their oral presentations so that may get you some interest :)

I think trying to frame everything around VCE and university, whilst relevant to the purposes of this forum, kind of hurts the "integrity" of our actions.  I'm all up for sponsoring a child and contributing to charity, but if we're going to do it I'd rather we do it purely for the cause, and not with some other benefit being emphasised alongside.

I guess having something like "What does this mean for you?" as a subheading on whatever topic we make might work I guess, as long as it's secondary to us being good people.  >.>
