Blackberry's and their plans?

I want to get my dad a blackberry for Christmas, but he has a work sim card that doesn't allow him to use the internet, only calls and text.

Does anyone know if this affects the phone use at all, apart from using the email and internet? I know that some phone companies have "Blackberry" plans, and that email services require you to somehow have it tied in with blackberry itself, so I want to make sure before I buy him one.

He has a Telstra Sim btw
