90% of the posters on the topic just post white noise, so there needs to be a reason other than "it should come back"

I'm for debates, but ones about religion seem to just end up being absurd and unconstructive (destructive if anything).

This forum, you have a couple kinds of people:
*The extremely/strongly religious people who take a strong position - Debate won't change their mind at all, whats the point of debating, they'll just constantly tell you that you're in correct. They'll come up with huge arguments for it, sometimes it get a bit heated/far/offensive because of this.

*The strongly religious people or even just plain religious people - These people dont take a strong stance in those threads/debates but enough is said to offend them half the time. Doesn't really create a welcoming or cohesive atmosphere. If some random who isn't part of the community reads it, they might stay away from VN.

*People who don't care, it wont affect them either way?

Those debates usually turn into flame wars and useless arguing. If both sides really believe in their religion to argue it strongly/get upset about it, the other person/side in the debate will never change their mind then. So, whats the point of arguing over your alternate viewpoint/theirs if their mind definitely can't be changed. Like i said it will just end up in a flame war and people will get hurt feelings some of the time, it is inevitable.

I really think threads of that nature shouldn't be allowed on VN, they always degrade into something else.

(I'm an athiest/agnostic and i'm all for religious tolerance and accepting other religions, i'm actually pretty into reading about religions and things like that and threads of that nature would be interesting but like i said they always turn into some kind of conflict here. It's very hard to start a thread that doesn't have the possibility of turning into a conflict. I think those things are best kept private and the primary purpose of this forum isn't to have religious debates anyway, its to talk about school work, so yes, those things should be kept private. If you want a religious debate, go find a religion forum.)

I agree that the threads aren't realy constructive/in line with the site's goals and (perhaps) for that reason they should be discouraged. However I don't think that VNers ever realy get properly offended or upset by them. People understand that this is the internet and that for that reason alone everything should be taken with a grain of salt and they accept that there are other people with different opinions who will chose to voice those opinions. No one is actualy getting hurt by threads like these (from what I have seen).

However, as was said earlier, it's not in line with the site's goals as a vce/atar forum and perhaps a religion board would be a bit over the top. However I think there still remains a place for religious debate in context in News/Politics and OGD just as much as there is cause for jokes threads or carbon tax threads in News/Politics and OGD.

You've always been able to do that but there has never been a thread where it happened properly. One time, a thread specifically for religious discussion was opened and ignored whilst people continued to post in every other thread they could find.

nothing wrong with philosophical debates regarding religion, for example the purpose of life...what religion has to offer and how it makes this world a much better place to live...i totally support a religion/society subforum

this is something moderators need to discuss vigorously!

I will support this motion if all aspects of religion and all religious perspectives are up for discussion. This includes atheism, the fallacy of faith, and criticism of any (and all) religious beliefs.

Religion-related threads inevitably descend into petty semantics and ad hominem. I don't think there is a single one on this site which hasn't had to be locked or at least reduced to non-arguments and insults. It's simply too emotionally charged a topic to expect teens and 20-somethings to be able to discuss calmly, I guess. Anyway, I cannot think of a single good reason for making a religion board, unless you're willing to try giving me one.
