Well ^ and I'm pretty much a technology retard. If it were solely up to me I would just choose the one that looks cool.
So I've picked two that I like the look of and I would like some advice on them.
I know nothing about computers so please make your advice understandable for me.

Also open to suggestions.
Primary use for uni so I'd be typing a lot on it (should mean I need good memory??)
I'd like to be able to watch tv on it so good picture would be good
Ummm I'm impatient. Very impatient so speed would be a nice benefit
Price in no objective (bahahaha I've always wanted to say that but price is an objective around $1000 would be SWEEEET)

Here are some of the ones i've looked at:
http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC7799/satellite-l640-05x-notebook
http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC8892/hp-pavilion-dv6-3131tx-notebook <- I thought this one was cool because it had the fingerprint password thing
Maybe this one http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC8928/satellite-l640-09m-notebook

Have a look at this:

Same Specs as the Top-of-the-range Macbook Pro 15inch, but $700 cheaper. Plus it has blu-ray and double the RAM (8GB)

And approximately a tenth of the battery life and portability.

If you buy an HP laptop (especially the DV range) absolutely make sure you trial it first. The keyboards have an idiotic design and the touchpads are the worst quality I've ever had to deal with.

Just want to jump in and say that the fingerprint password thing WILL piss you off because IT NEVER WORKS (or I have defective fingerprints...)

So:

1. Fast laptop because impatient (like everyone)
2. Lots of storage space, due to uni work?
3. Looks sort of good
4. Need a TV Tuner?
5. Around the ~$1000

Here's an Alienware M11x gaming laptop that definitely looks good at $1500

Here's a $999 Business laptop, the HP Pavillion dv6 that will definitely let you watch movies and work

My last suggestion in this Dell XPS 15 Laptop for $1199, it'll get you anywhere

The other forum-mongers and you can decide which of these is suitable for you.
Of course, if it wasn't for uni and mobility, I'd suggest a Tower PC for raw power and price value.  8-)

True, but having tried out the new DV6's, the only real annoying thing is the trackpad, but seriously, in my opinion, it doesn't take long to adapt. In regards to portability, the dv6 is about .1kg heavier. So far though, I haven't seen a laptop beat the macbook range for Battery Life, but considering you save more than $700+ (comparing to Macbook Pros), I can get an extra battery, SSD, Microsoft Office, a netbook or even another desktop etc. In regards to the Graphics card, the HP's graphics card is from the same line as the MBP, but is faster.  I just think it is more of a better deal than macbooks.
