The ONJ is also a very aesthetically pleasing place, whilst WEHI is...less so.
Having said that, it's also ages from campus so you won't be getting much support that way

What department would you enrol through - do you actually enrol through Austin?
Everyone enrolling through MIIM but off campus (even Burnet) was never around for student stuff and we have plenty of events through our student committee/that's how I have made most friends both inside and outside of my Honours cohort.
I think that you will definitely end up quite isolated if you're all the way out in Heidelberg, it's quite far from campus even if you are aware of the events.  Isolation is not the best - not only if you want to socialise but it also makes it difficult to find other students you can relate to and that will support you when you're struggling.
But this is a pros and cons situation - you're probably going to do less well without a peer support system but also less well if you end up studying something that doesn't really interest you as much.  Interests should be at the forefront - you're not going to perform if you aren't passionate about what you're working on.

mahler004, I don't think he's concerned about his first year average for the purposes of Hons since he said he had already been offered multiple things, I think he's more concerned for the purpose of FETH.
Frances Elizabeth Thomson Honours Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to around 15-20 students with the highest SGPAs entering into an Hons degree through MDHS and that have not received another scholarship (eg the WEHI scholarship would exclude you).  It's 5k in value and you get it sometime around July when they sort out their shit.  This year friends with around 85-86 averages missed out - the person with the lowest average I know of that received a scholarship had an 88.  But this is for total SGPA and that does include your first year grades.

I don't know about other departments but that's the same for PDI now.  We have our own animal facility run for you, flow cytometry facility run for us with operators, people make our buffers for us.  It's less 'everything is done for you' than WEHI but we still have the basic stuff.  I'd presume other departments would be moving toward this if they were as successful as either DMI or WEHI in NHMRC terms.

Edit: do you know what laboratories you'd be considering at WEHI?  Just curious as to where you might end up.  If you don't want to say online feel free to PM me!  They just have a lot of young lab heads they promote too early, you don't want to sit yourself in a toxic situation.

If it's the ONJ I think it's through La Trobe. PM sent. What kind of events do they run?

I would really highly recommend not doing it with them then.  Like, in terms of research, the difference between La Trobe and Unimelb is quite large and where you go for Honours does matter if you want to continue with research down the line.  If you're just wanting to get into med, though, it's a different story.  Are you sure you PM'd ;) I didn't get anything.

To people who've done molecular and cellular biomedicine (MCB), would I be a fool for not attending the lectures, and just choosing to watch the recordings?

Thanks!

I don't advocate not attending lectures, that's a personal choice depending on circumstances (distance to university being the most pertinent). But, watching the recordings for MCB will be sufficient to score highly.

I didn't really go to lectures and I was still fine. Depends on how efficient you find it. If you're finding that you're using 3 hours to travel to and from university then its best to either do work on public transport or just do most of your study near home.

If you stay up to date you should be fine for MCB. I didn't attend any of the lectures and let them build up (at one stage I was like 30ish behind or something) and was very lucky to get a 66. So basically don't do what I did.
