I'm applying for a Diploma in Mathematical Sciences, and was wondering what the "prior academic experience" meant when it comes to selection(https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2015/D-MATHSC)? Do they look at all my university exam scores when determining whether they want to give me a spot...? Or would they only look at Maths and Stats subjects I have completed so far?
This is just speculation, but I imagine it would be all of them, with a sensible emphasis on the maths subjects. Your application goes through both the Science Student Centre as well as the Commerce Student Centre. Science is probably looking for reasonable performance in maths subjects, while Commerce is seeing whether taking on the concurrent diploma would severely hamper your academic performance, especially if you indicate on your course planning document that you're going to be overloading during semester(s).

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It does say that it's a criterion for ranking applications specifically, and selection for enrolment in a course like the diploma is probably far from brutal.
Thoughts on my journey through university

hey guys not sure if i am allowed to ask this, but i got a lot of time on my hands these holidays (i finished exams early, dont have a job, no friends) so i literalyl spend all day at home on the computer/watching movies/ps3....anyway the idea came to me maybe i could get a head start on next semester. Is there any way possible to find out the required text books for your subjects next semester or access the lms or listen to lectures from last semester?
thanks.

To add to what's been said, you can try going to the library catalogue and clicking on the link that says 'Subject name / code'. From there you can search for the subjects you are doing. Some subjects will come up with lists of pertinent books that the coordinators have given to the library staff.

BIOL10001
Im doing this next sem! Any tips for it? I went through it, it doesn't look that easy there is so much content to it. And the exam has a written short answer section unlike BIOL10004 and BIOL10005 where most of it is simple MC and fill ins.
2013-2014:| VCE
2015-2018:| Bachelor of Science (Neuroscience) @ UoM
2019-X:| Doctor of Dental Surgery (discontinued)
2019 -2021:| Master of Physiotherapy

Currently: Physiotherapist working at a musculoskeletal clinic. Back pain, sore neck, headaches or any other pain limiting your study? Give me a PM (although please do see your personal health professional first!)

Any questions related to pathways towards studying dentistry or physiotherapy? Gimmi a PM!

How do you know what's on the exams? The past papers aren't even in the library catalogue?

EDIT: lol nevermind! I just read levilamp's review  :D

Trust me, even if you take the biomedical road (way more MCQ exams at level 2 and 3, fewer written assessments in the subjects), you're going to have to write something eventually. There's a lot of content in this subject but it's mostly easy (breadth > depth and complexity) and relates directly to the world - there isn't too much higher-order thinking involved. And I have that set of notes for the first 30ish lectures - I've lost track of who I've sent them to but I've got a few emails to respond to with that link. The exam was a bit long, but it was very fair!

It's not a hard subject at ALL if you're looking for an 80. That said, it (and lots of the zoology/botany subjects) are harder to get extremely high marks in than Lv1 and 2 biomedical theory subjects if you have unrealistically lofty goals :P so maybe keep that in mind for the future

Thanks for that Levi! Yeah I've gone through your notes the content looks really interesting, its the kind of stuff I really enjoyed during BIOL10004.

Hope Elgar doesn't take any of the zoology lectures haha

Hey Inside Out,
Do you know if it would be suitable to take signals and system in second year sem2 as I did not do have the "recommended knowledge" stated in the handbook.I am not planning to major in electrical but interested in electrical subjects. Thankyou :)

Yea as long as you've done the prerequesites, should be all good :) you definately don't need digital systems Or enad, signal is more mathematical, think fourier transforms in eng maths.

Thanks. That sounds great, I took a look at the past exams and it does seem to be more in a mathematical approach. Do you think it is possible to email the lecturer for ELEN30012 lecture notes?

One of the few perks of being a dental student (apart from 16 week semesters and 8am lectures) is the rivalry between Colgate and Oral-B to see who can bribe us with better goodie bags! :D

Colgate rep today gave us over a dozen goods including a Dora the Explorer electric toothbrush. I'm so happy :)
:D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D

For those who have applied for DDS check your student email we don't need to order a academic transcript anymore :)
"This email is to inform you that the University has arranged to send transcripts of your studies at the University of Melbourne (including your Semester 1 results which will be finalised at the end of this week) to GEMSAS free of charge."

For fucks sake. So I just wasted $40 getting it printed out at student services yesterday. Rage.
