how lenient is UoM in regards to word limits in regards to assignments.
The word limit of a question was 200. I wrote 213 words.
Unless otherwise specified, you're given a 10% margin of leniency. You're within the 180-220 bracket, so you should be fine :)

People who previously did QM1, were past exams available? and were they relatively difficult?

A visual metaphor for semester one so far:

Anyone else find that after first year, you tend to get less help with things? (especially assignments)
I knew expectations would be higher but wow
Was this inspired by the bio psych assignment, cos if so I feel you lol. 1000 word assignment due before we've even had our second tutorial :')

We only got one practise exam, which didn't reflect the structure of the actual exam (the practise one was all short answer questions whereas the real one had 15 MCQ); it was moderately difficult. I don't think it was an actual 'past' exam, just one that JThong made up.

Is there a need to rote learn definitions/formulas or are they given to you?

A lot of the formulas are given to you on a formula sheet which means you don't have to memorise them; some are excluded though, for some unknown reason. Some of the more complicated formulas towards the end of the course (e.g. sample distribution for b1/b2, which we actually got tested on) we actually had to rote learn as they weren't on the formula sheet, which was kinda lame.

All of the definitions you need to know very well (none are given to you); I wouldn't say that you need to literally 'rote learn' definitions word for word but you'd need to have a pretty airtight understanding of what they mean.

In truth, they probably give you too much help in first year. Uni is, in many ways, about finding your own feet. It's confronting to start off with, but the sense of being able to rely on yourself without really having to rely on the teaching staff is empowering, not to mention a useful skill when it comes to postgraduate degrees and/or employment.
+1. If you are not a good independent learner and are not good at finding out things yourself you are really fked over for uni. The main difference between uni and school imo.

how lenient is UoM in regards to word limits in regards to assignments.
The word limit of a question was 200. I wrote 213 words.

For my PhD first year thing the word limit was 10 000 words. I wrote 23 000 words. Nobody said a thing!
I feel like it gets more lax later on...thank god.

Yeah i've actually got a similar question too.

Has anyone been in a relationship, then subsequently went on exchange and are able to comment on how that went :)

I went on exchange for 6mo after my boyfriend and I had been together for 3 years.
We are still together now for 6.5 years and live together. Now he wants to go o/s himself for 6 months while I stay here to study.
I would say it went pretty ok the first time, would be fine with it again...but it's probably different for every couple.

We are people that see each other at home for 2 hours or so a night and then are working all day. We sometimes go out on the weekend, but we don't eat meals together, drive to work/school together etc, so we are used to being apart and daily bouts of separation work for us. Other couples I know need to be all over each other and talking to one another all the time. It depends on the dynamic of your relationship.

Anyone got any tips on how to get girls at uni? I have found it extremely difficult over the past few years. There is really limited opportunity to talk to girls during class. Luckily, one of my classes this semester involves some group work. I managed to talk to one particular girl which i was attracted to. I don't think the feelings were mutual though. I guess i could attempt to speak to her after class...but that seems daunting....Sigh. Another year of being alone. Take me back to High school :'(

For information sessions that require a booking, what happens if you just rock up without making a booking? do they kick you out?

Any one know where I can find some student accessible sandwich presses/sandwich grills on campus? (preferably close to the FBE and university square)
