Just did my first subject review on BIOM20001. Feel free to give me feedback or ask me questions. Will probably do one for BusFi soon

I'm sorry to hear BIOM20001 didn't go as you hoped. It is a very demanding subject but it's one that probably sets the standard for the rest of the degree - in other words, if you could deal with that, you should be okay for the rest of the degree. It forced me (and many others) to look at the way we were learning and make changes. Essentially, as you progress, the workload increases and the time to study decreases (due to contact hours but also as you get older there's just other things you have to do in your life) and you will find quicker ways to get through more content more efficiently and effectively. Personally, my marks keep falling a tad each semester but tend to "reset" whenever I initiate a new technique into my study. It can be a bit jarring and difficult but I encourage you to have a look at what you could work at and see if it helps next semester. Good luck. :)

I really appreciate this! It made me feel better and I will definitely try and see how I can improve my methods in studying bio subjects . thanks Stick! Good luck too!

if you like commerce, try introductory microeconomics. 2x 1 hour lecture and 1 1 hour tutorial every week. I heard BLAW is easy but how interesting is it? I'm considering doing it next semester.

I can understand your grievances with MCB and it certainly can be said that the detail involved in the subject is overwhelming. At the time, as I think I wrote in my review, I was quite frustrated by the focus on minutiae. What I suspect you will found, however, is that a lot of what you covered in MCB does pop back up later on, and despite having long forgot a lot of the details, the framework will still be there. You will find that to be invaluable in the coming years.

One of the sad realities of biomedicine is that it is very much focused on learning the details of things. I'm afraid to say that a lot of what you cover from now on will be more like MCB than it will your first year classes. I know you're disappointed in the subject, and perhaps your result too, but I'd really encourage you to try to be a bit more constructive about the experience and think of some ways to better cope with a subject like MCB. You might find that helps you a lot over the next couple of years.

I actually enjoyed learning some of the content but I just couldn't seem to remember all the necessary details. Mind sharing some tips you've found useful in preparing for rote-learning subjects? I think one of the mistakes I've made is using the same method I studied 1st year bio subjects for MCB. I really want to do better. Thanks!

I'm not into listing tips and tricks for Uni because nobody ever really remembers them, so I'll give you the one that's always worked for me:

teach. Be it a wall, friends, or the voices in your head, teach somebody. If you can explain what you've learned, you've learned it. If you don't understand something, try and explain it and watch the pieces fall together. I cannot emphasise enough how worthwhile a strategy it is, how much time it saves. Also very helpfully supported by evidence as everyone has heard just about ad nauseum.

It's pretty bland in the beginning but i found the majority of the subject to be at least somewhat interesting. Would recommend as a relatively stress free subject if that's appealing.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, but I'm unable to view my results due to the following message:

"'Withhold Student Results (Enquiry)' imposed by sanction '1SF Debt 1 - SSAF Warning' "

I can see only my WAM, however. What should I do to get past this?

Did you pay your Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) earlier this year?

No I didn't, but I thought I didn't have to due to HECS covering it?

HECS covers tuition fees only. If you wanted financial assistance for SSAF I think you would have needed to apply for some other HELP program.

So would I still be able to pay the fee and see my results?

Yeah I only paid the SSAF like a week ago. Pay it online and then within 1-2 days of processing you should be able to see your results.

I got the alert button for SSAF fees a while back too.

For SSAF you can submit a SA-HELP form online (which is separate from HECS...like you I thought HECS covered it too), and after they approve it you're all good (you should be eligible if you've got HECS approved)
