Hah it's probably not a coincidence that I open this thread for the first time in a while and this is the first thing I see...
The benefits of hanging out here just slowly decline over time. You'll have time to check in whilst doing post grad whatever, there's just not much incentive for you to do so and the comments are much less relatable so you usually just read the thread and close the tab. You don't need to make radical sacrifices, relax.
Yeah, it's pretty much this. The conversations here become less relatable as time goes on - once you get to a honours/a grad degree (coursework or research) the courses become more specific and focused, so the chance of someone here doing your course become pretty much zero. I generally find that graduate students form tighter groups as well (n=1, of course, and should have been more outgoing in my undergrad, in retrospect...)
There's also the factor that you become less anonymous to your lecturers as well - makes one a bit more reluctant to be completely candid on a forum such as this.
Yep, I've been active on this thread for the last three years and I can tell you that as soon as post-grad or work life starts members immediately become inactive. I agree with that - I guess life is just more demanding afterwards - not just study and work - a lot of my friends at that age start to be in close relationships, start spending more time with family, etc - I guess these stuff take over. It's a bit scary when I think about it - if from next year I don't even have the time to do something as small as checking what's up on AN, what else will I have to sacrifice?
That's cool! What graduate studies are you thinking of specifically?
Reinforcing what Russ said, it's not that you become so busy that you can't spending thirty seconds checking up on a forum, it's just that your interests change and the going ons here become less relatable.
To be honest, I feel sometimes that I was busier in undergrad (especially around assessment periods) - I took a pretty heavy course load, was working (not as much as other people, but still) and managed to maintain a decent GPA. Could also just be that the work now is more interesting and less tedious.
