Hey so I'm currently in year 12 and am looking at going to Melb Uni next year.

I want to study a BCOMM but don't meet the prerequisites to do this as I'm not doing methods, but I was thinking I get accepted into an Arts degree and then transfer in to the commerce once I'm there.

How realistic is it to be able to do this at Melbourne? How difficult in terms of grades etc. to be allowed to transfer?
I'd be alright doing an arts degree because ultimately what I want to do is a Juris Doctor of law.

Thank you  :) :) :)

Keep in mind too that you will still need methods 3/4 or equivalent to do core subjects in commerce. For example Introductory Microeconomics (ECON10004), under the 'Eligibility and Requirements': https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/subjects/econ10004/eligibility-and-requirements.
You are able to do a subject called Introduction to Mathematics (MAST100012) if you have done methods 1/2 to meet that prerequisite in your first semester, or complete an online bridging course over the summer

Hi,

I'm currently doing a BSc majoring in Statistics, and will graduate at the end of 2019. I am thinking of making a switch to commerce, through the Masters of Finance program (not the management one). I've heard that with commerce (and uni degrees in general) it depends a lot on the individual and if you take the initiative to get internships and work experience, you can get lots out of your degree but if you don't, the paper qualifications won't get you very far. Has anyone done the masters program? Is there a high payoff if you're willing to work hard on the degree itself and on getting internships or is it ultimately something employers will not even distinguish from the Bcomm? Thanks very much.

@sam

Definitely depends on a lot on what you put in (essentially what you put in is what you get out of it).

Since you still have 1.5 years left of your degree, definitely could look at commerce-related jobs as an undergrad (80% of them are open to students from all disciplines, so you can definitely get those jobs without doing a masters). If you're thinking of applying because you wanted to mask a not-so-stellar WAM from undergrad, then it's definitely a pathway to consider.

Have plenty of friends who've gotten great 'comm' jobs from Science, so definitely give that a look!
In terms of advantages of a masters, there are definitely top firms (eg. McKinsey) that view it in a more favourable light than just the standard BCom. Most roles, however, are available to students from both bcom and masters

So I recently got offered an appointment with the university GP for Thursday 45 minutes before my exam (I don't know how long my appointment will be), which I rejected as a result since I haven't made a special consideration application yet (and when I do, it will take up to a few days to process) so I am not allowed to miss it. I just did ultrasound scans for a potential cancer diagnosis, even if scans doesn't show that the tumor is cancerous, ultrasounds are not conclusive and I need to do a biopsy. I got offered an appointment for next Wednesday instead, since my GP only works on Wednesday and Thursday (there are like only two female GP in my university clinic). I feel like I'm forced to choose between my studies and health unless I can get an emergency appointment on Wednesday if the scan results confirms a cancerous tumor. Should I do the exam on Thursday, then file a special consideration application for a re-sit for two exams (I can do it through the university psych since I have my medical referrals, and file in a medical certificate later), and go the GP next week?

Hi all,

Question about ACCT20002 (IFA2): does the mid-semester exam coincide with lecture streams or is it held at some other time?

(I know that ACCT20001 (Cost Man) had every student doing the mid-sem at 5:45pm on a Wednesday regardless of the lecture stream enrolled in, hopefully it's not the same with IFA2...)

Thanks  :)

Perhaps try to find an alternative GP that could do this? If not possible, just my two cents but would recommend to just go see the doctor. It might only seem like a week, but if it's cancerous this could mean a huge difference. A 49NH on your transcript can be very easily explained in the future - your long term health is so much more important.

Hey guys, is it possible to do a level 1 core subject during third year if I don't need the subject as a prerequisite for other subjects?

Totally fine, assuming you’ve planned it and know which subjects are available in which semester, and don’t exceed the amount of level 1 points you can have :) I’ve personally put off OB (a second year subject, but simililar in that I don’t need it for any prerequisites or anything), and there’s been no issues

Thanks! I'm planning to defer intro macro ^^

A question for Doctor of Medicine students:

What's the student contribution amount (on average) for a bachelor of biomed and the doctor of medicine?
Please enlighten me if I am ignorant about any of the associated financial matters at UoM.

2018: Chemistry, Physics, Specialist Maths, Math Methods, English

Assuming you're a domestic student, you're looking at somewhere in the realm of $26-28k for your undergrad biomed degree. This will vary over time depending on the years you complete the degree (prices tend to increase over the years) and the actual subjects you complete.

The MD cost depends on whether or not your place is supported by the government (is a CSP/BMP) or not (FFP). A subsidised place is obviously cheaper--I think around $43,000 for the entire four-year degree. A full-fee place would cost somewhere around $300,000. Again - these values will change over time. Many people only apply to medical school for CSP/BMP places because the FFP price goes above the HECS threshold and would require you to pay some part of your contribution upfront. There are many explanations available about the difference between a regular CSP and a BMP online if you search. Hope this makes sense.

I sat the introductory microeconomics exam and drew the graphs in pencil, but I can't recall whether the exam paper specified that only pen is allowed to be used. Would the exam markers check the original copy of my paper to see whether I drew the graphs and give me marks for them provided that they are correct?

Only asking because I received a wam update today (I'm pretty sure) for intro micro and it's a bit lower than I expected for this subject.

Pretty sure that they mark it directly from the submitted workbooks that you hand in. It's not like they get digitised to be marked like what VCAA does.

Just so you're aware, I'm pretty certain intro micro isn't out yet. Your WAM change is most likely due to another subject, as I also take intro micro and have not had an updated WAM

Nope, Georgy emailed us this morning saying it was out. I can see the marks there now officially.
