If you miss a tutorial, does it mean you can't get full marks for participation?

Okay maybe it was an overly strong comment expressing a personal opinion but it's just kind of a 'omg first year gotta do everything social at uni' kind of thing to do, in my eyes.  The whole process of securing the tickets/table, dressing up, etc etc is a first year kind of thing!  I'm not the only one who thinks this but you can feel free to disagree with me if you like going to balls past first year or whatever.

I just tend to be overly skeptical of Australian uni social events and a bit of a total snob, forgive me if I offended you because it wasn't intentional.

The ones you know about ;)

There are societies at melbourne uni that aren't uni-affiliated and secret, i.e you need to be invited. Like the 'A1'.

in my personal and humble opinion, i agree with mavisgibbons

gonna lay out my thoughts here with candor, don't take it the wrong way

all of the uni social events are ridiculously superficial and the overwhelming majority of people who go match the bill of students who just want to get ridiculously fucked up on cheap grog. if you want to party, go to a festival or a decent gig in the city - i like most electronic music so i go to festivals like maitreya, rainbow serpent, and as for clubs loop bar and the hifi. i just find everyone at uni gigs so shallow - i can't put my finger on it, but there's something about the collective mentality that just makes me hate every minute of being around super drunk uni students. i don't know exactly why i feel so untoward the uni gigs, but it just feels like people haven't discovered how to party properly yet - people are still stuck in the binge drinking culture of being 16 and have about the same maturity.

it's probably also because some other music festivals and gigs have really opened my eyes as to what a good party can be, so the idea of spending money for a ticket to get myself drenched in foam as though it's the most revolutionary party concept since '93 just really doesn't appeal.

sorry nirbaan haha

if you're going to party, do it some place where you'll actually meet some candidly interesting people.

Fair enough, but I still find A1 to be kind of the same deal as what VivaTequila is talking about above.
I'm always skeptical of uni events that have tickets going on sale at 9am but sell out by 8 30.

Edit: as a comparison I could use the fact that the majority of people attending frat parties o/s while I was there were freshmen.  If we asked sophomores, juniors or seniors to go they would usually decline unless they were members of a frat. They preferred going out for tapas/drinks/spirit BYOs or going into the city to go to a club that was not even related to college at all.  That's kind of how I see uni events in a way - sure I went to a lot of frats when I was there because it was a novelty!  But sometimes they become kind of 'immature' because they ARE a novelty and there are a lot of younger people there.  I doubt I would have been roofied as easily if I had hung out with older friends and avoided the frats, but I doubt I would have had my college experience if I had avoided the frats.  So I'm glad I did it, it all has it's value, had I continued to study there I would have been movin' on up to bars and clubs.

Yeah.  My heart and sympathies goes out to the three families that were affected.  The timing could not have been worse - right before Easter.

It's so scaring that this could happen to anyone.  I'm sure many of us walk up and down Swanston Street quite regularly.  And that facade was heritage-listed as well.

There were people taking photos and videos on their iPhones and I kinda wanted to slap them. That kinda reeked of disrespect for the deceased.

I was safely in class during the wall collapse...fate can be ridiculously unfair.

I've been known to enjoy the free food and cheap booze at uni events, mainly the same ones nirbaan mentioned, but from what I've seen, many of the main ringleaders of this culture appear quite brash and only willing to talk to people from within certain cliques. So I can certainly see where VT is coming from. But it's still a good environment if you have mates around.

I think I'd prefer to wear more clothes than just a loincloth, lol, (especially given my lack of big arms), but if worse comes to worst..

Anybody have any interesting moments with group assignments? They seriously make my blood boil, especially when the tutor randomly assigns you to groups.

Most of the people in my 3-4 person groups are usually on the ball, which is great, but there is always one person who spoils it by being slack. Currently discussing topic ideas for a group assignment with 3 other people (due this Tuesday) and we cannot start writing it up because we are waiting on one person to respond with her thoughts. Oh, and I have been sending out emails since last Thursday.

We could start it without her initial input but I am trying to be all democratic by trying to gain everybody's input. In any case, I am starting it and finishing most of it tomorrow. If she does not respond by that time, I will be sending a nice email to my tutor explaining that she contributed jack all. :)

I should probably state that my best and worst marks have come from group tasks. When you have a competent group (i.e., when you can choose your own group), hello 100s! Otherwise, hello H3s!
