What do you guys think? Personally, find the immaturity of these people to be coming out in droves.

The student union made a mistake, and by and large they shouldn't post about unrelated political events.

The shitstorm that students are making far exceeds the crime though - who is honestly that passionate about Margaret Thatcher and knew of her before the UMSU posted about her?

I couldn't give a rats because I know it's just a trivial stupid act, and it's not really worth much attention.

With all respect to the dead, please just stop bitching if you didn't even know who she was in the first place.

clarification: the student body's response to the UMSU's post should also be viewed sceptically because I could guarantee you 90% of the students causing the havoc don't actually care.

also edit to justify my rather polarised and frank stance - I say this going by the reactions of my friends, whom I know to be pretty shallow. This isn't the correct analogy - but to me it seems like people are ranting for the sake of ranting, not because they are passionate. It's all superfluous trifle that could result in a media scandal.

You didn't know who Thatcher was?

It's a pretty big deal man, it's made headlines many newspapers around Australia and there have been a ton of ex-students and non-uni affiliated people having a go at us students because of this.

Basically, the main issue is that these knob-jockeys think they are about 50 times more important than what they really are. Nobody even votes in these elections or if they do it's because they were heckled to. Before, they were irrelevant, but now with respect to the SSAF giving these idiots millions of dollars, they actually have our money. Instead of these arese-clowns actually getting lectures recorded and making campus a better place for students, they think they're relevant and get to have an opinion on political events. They are intellectual nobodies and completely irrelevant fools.

Pal, I pay $500 a year to these guys through SSAF. And these people spend their time deciding whether or not to celebrate the death of a controversial leader that none of them lived under in a country none of them lived in, that had virtually no effect on them.

Is there anyway to start an alternative society to run for UMSU leadership? Because I'm willing to take on that role to remove these douchebags.

My platform: "We're not the Socialist Alternative."

Nope, I didn't, and still don't know who Thatcher was, and nor do I care (perhaps out of ignorance, but actually out of current disinterest). Problem?

I don't think it's a pretty big deal at all.

I do agree that the attention driven against us is pretty significant, and I recognise that it's because we've had our student union jump into the foray of this political issue with some controversial commentary. So you're right there, that this is the issue.

The money is also going to waste, I agree, and we could elect better leaders.

However, I still stand by my comments in that a lot of the students are parading their abhorrence and are masquerading as highly offended pretentious students at the "University of Melbourne". That's all I'm saying, and I think that this should be critically examined.

The world we live in today, the free society and deregulated markets, dynamic economy, the ability to buy and own your own house is largely because of Margaret Thatcher.

Remember, this is the same union that has now, for two years in a row, put down a motion to buy a $200 wreath to lay on behalf of the UniMelb students at the Dawn Service to recognise the sacrifices of our diggers past and present.  It is the same union that, instead, used your SSAF to spend $15000, yes thats right, on people dressed up as fruit for O-Week.

What is needed is for the president to come out and condemn the first motion and support the second.  Of course, she wont and until she does, this union is not representative of the majority of students at University of Melbourne.

You have contradicted yourself.

"I don't think it's a pretty big deal at all.

I do agree that the attention driven against us is pretty significant"

They are arse-clowns who waste $500 of my own money a year, misrepresent me in society and feel high and mighty because they think the general student populace gives two shits about them. What some pretentious Arts student complains about, I don't care. However, I think you should read up on who Thatcher was before you join the discussion, many of the students at our University are in this country now because of her policies and although I don't agree with celebrating anyone's death, there is a reason why people are throwing street parties on hearing of her passing.

Here is an extremely well-written article by Russell Brand, I had no idea he could write this well:

Yes. Big big problem.

I disagree with basically everything everyone wrote here, and for whatever reason I think it's important to register that. I really have no interest in saying much more, apart from that if you get so riled up by the current union's policies that you need to rant about it, maybe you should, hey, get well informed and vote next time around. Otherwise you're complicit.

That's why you don't vote for those "knob-jockeys" such as the ones mentioned in the article.  And if they are from the Socialist Alternative, Stand Up! or Activate, you don't vote for them if you feel that way.  That's why you're encouraged to vote; to keep "knob-jockeys" out of office.

I posted some stuff (not here) about how people were being cunts by celebrating the death of anybody, period, before this even became an issue.  So I was pretty outraged.

But just so you guys know, the majority of your SSAF fee actually goes into advertising and marketing and not the union.

How do you connect to the uni's Wifi?

I can only sometimes connect to it, but most of the time I always get an error message saying "Unable to connect to Unimelb".

What device are you using? Do you mean Visitor?

Probably not linked because of the dates but just for everyone:

From Friday 12 April, students may notice some changes to security certificates when they connect to UniWireless on their devices. These changes are part of the recent improvements to the University’s wireless network. Students who have trouble connecting should run the setup tool by selecting Connect2UoM from the available wireless networks and the connection wizard will help do the rest. Alternatively, follow the device configuration guides on http://wireless.unimelb.edu.au or available in hard copy at the library service desks. For more information, please contact Student IT.

'Recent improvements'?  Is that why it locks me out when I put my laptop to sleep between classes?  Sounds like an improvement to me!

Deleted User: you need to connect to 'Connect2UoM' before you can connect to Uni Wireless.  It allows you to do one thing only: download an application that helps your device connect to Uni Wireless.  Then you will connect to the actual wireless and you never have to connect through the beginning network again.

I've already gone through Connect2UoM and been able to connect to UniWireless. The problem is that the next time I go to try to connect to UniWireless, it doesn't always work. Sometimes it will just freeze, other times it will take me at least a minute before it connects. I'm using an iPad btw.
