Im still confused as to whether we just have to enrol in one subject for each semester or fully enrol in all subjects for each semester?
Just one per semester AFAIK (: But don't take my word for that. Try to enrol for at least three per semester to ensure that you fulfil any full-time study requirements. Remember, you can drop out of both Sem 1 and Sem 2 subjects before their respective census dates and choose new ones until two weeks after the commencement of each semester, so you have nothing to lose but enrolling fully! It also helps the subject coordinators if they know as early as possible how many people roughly intend to take their subject (with regard to booking lecture theatres, hiring tutors, printing readers, etc).

Re:AN Meet 2013/14, LeviLamp/simpak/Hancock/scribble are legends IRL too. (Did I miss someone?) I hope more of you all can make it to the January event! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves as it was scheduled from 1 - 3 PM and most people left around 6:30 PM, some lingered longer.

Can anyone think of volunteer laboratory opportunities over the summer at UoM? I don't qualify for UROP until winter break as fresh meat (first year during 2013). Thanks.

Speaking of UROP, has anybody done it here? Very curious as to what sort of projects they get you to do and what working there is like.

I am doing it right now.
You don't get to choose your project it depends who has funding they typically try to tailor it to your interests/whatever you say you're planning on doing or want to do.  It's difficult to answer what 'working there' is like because you get placed in different institutes - a whole bunch participate and even within the same institute no one lab experience is the same.

charmanderp VivaTequila isn't doing UROP rn he's in Russia ;)

Btw Shenz0r/any other curious people, if you wait a couple of weeks or something and go to the WEHI website and see their UROP section you will potentially see me answering a bunch of questions about UROP with a large picture of me doing some kind of 'staged pipetting' motion or something /: goodie.

I was asked to fill out a profile (that I am currently writing lol) about my experience!

Well he's doing some science research program at the moment! It's why he's in Russia.

I'm also interested in lab placements. I checked a lot of company websites but they don't appear to have adverts for it (is it more of a cold calling thing?) or have opportunities but only for secondary students.

Value of networking is apparent here. Try talking to any lecturers who might know you and ask for their help or advice

I don't mean to be rude or insinuate that it's not possible for you guys to do lab work at this stage but at unimelb demand for this kind of thing is really high and because we participate in UROP as MDHS it's unlikely that they will take you on to do actual research projects over summer unless it's a specially organised summer scholarship thing which they've basically stopped advertising.  UROP is the normal entry pathway for this kind of thing.

There are placements in labs in which you do more 'lab administration' work rather than research or RA work but those are typically advertised and given to third year students.  In third year you will start getting emails about potential 'few hour a week' kinds of jobs in labs.  I have a few friends doing them but they typically don't allow first years to do that kind of thing or usually even second year students (in the MDHS departments at least).  They tend to choose students with more lab experience and that have studied/are studying things that are higher up and more specific to the research that actually goes on in the lab in which you would be placed.

Even as a third year it can be difficult to seek these sorts of opportunities!  But what Russ says is correct, talking to and befriending lecturers and demonstrators that work in labs you're interested in; showing you have an enthusiasm about what they're studying/researching will all help you to be the first point of call should anything come up.
