Thanks guys! You are correct about networking being invaluable; I'm feeding mosquitoes at Bio21? this Saturday (genetics students might know what I mean bahaha, sweet salary). I have to think of a convoluted way to present it on my resume. 'Culiseta longiareola mastication and nourishment technician'.

Yes, which is why I'm seeking humiliating lab monkey chores. I have an interning interview this Friday, wish me luck.  :-\

I'm also interested in lab placements. I checked a lot of company websites but they don't appear to have adverts for it (is it more of a cold calling thing?) or have opportunities but only for secondary students.

MelonBar and Ballerina, it never hurts to email some supervisors/lab heads who work at research institutes. I emailed a couple of lab heads at Florey and one of them responded and allows me to do a project under his supervision until February 2014. It's an actual project where you get to do experiments and get to know new lab techniques. Don't worry about not knowing the procedures, the supervisor will happily teach. I'm starting the project tomorrow and I hope it will be fun!

There are also some official summer studentships at many institutes, but all of them I suppose have closed now. Keep an eye on the application dates for next year's summer!

http://www.cancervic.org.au/about-our-research/biomedical/research_sum_vacation_studentships

And oh, to look for the supervisors' emails, just go to the institute's website!
Good luck!

Institutes (rather than UoM itself) will definitely be your best bet but keep in mind that people have to pay you either with real money or with time which is why places in which you learn proper skills are relatively scarce.

Pretty much close to the real deal if you are interested in finding out more about research. Your learning experience will depend on your supervisor. I did mine in the Physiology Department and was lucky enough to get heaps of experience in report writing and lab techniques and I wouldn't have covered in my course. Feel free to PM me for tips on getting in this subject :)

This looks fantastic - I had my eye on it when I was planning on doing a science stream for breadth.

My last subject for advanced standing still hasn't been formally processed, though it's assured it will be given prerequisite credit and I can swap into the subjects I want before Christmas. So I  tried to find any Level 2 science subjects without prereqs to avoid the enrollment fine, and now I have the weirdest course plan. It looks like I'm pretty crazy about geology, genetics, psychology, painting techniques and the 'Dangerous Earth'. God, Nat, you're all over the place, eyes on the prize.

Thanks so much for all your assistance! I'm content with any laboratory experience, as having it on my resume will help score better opportunities in a more rewarding setting. Lab techs don't seem to need many qualifications either, hmm.

And oh, to look for the supervisors' emails, just go to the institute's website!
Good luck!

You champion, thank you so much for the links! And that is awesome, congrats. I should have had the foresight to do that a couple of months ago, seeing as a fellow freshman just received the opportunity to help out as a research assistant.  >:( >:( (Soooo happy for her >:(.)

I've heard good, bludge-y things about UNIB10005.

Yes you would, but what else would you major in? And it'll look weird as on a resume saying B.Sci (random), M.E (Mech).
