Farrago Magazine

to me

Hi Natalie,

Thank you for applying to be a Farrago illustrator in 2014. I'm happy to let you know that your application has been successful, congratulations! We really like your art style and feel it would look great in the magazine.

At this stage there isn't much to do, as the print deadline for edition one is still weeks away. Expect to hear from us around the end of this month with a brief of what we'd like you to illustrate in edition one. We're also planning a social event for our entire art and design team, so keep an eye peeled for more information about that as well.

Congratulations again,
Zoe

Right?!

I just got an email back from them with a meeting time to discuss a research project in the winter break ;D

A word of recommendation to all students (especially those in science and biomed): Try to get yourselves into as many short-term research programs/internships/etc. as possible; it looks amazing on a CV and it's also great on postgrad applications. I can only speak really from a Monash perspective but I know UoM has UROP and things like that and I strongly suggest that people take advantage of these things :)

@simpak Yeah, much info on GPA/WAM/SGPA seems to contradict due to the absence of a more standardized and universal system between grad courses and universities. :( I'll use SGPA in some form on my resume since it's a frequently used method, and I can pretend Chemistry 2 was a bad dream~*~*~

@RTandon Thank you! ♥ Awh, that's really great to see. I don't know much about Farrago. I opened  it once with the intention of reading about the people competing UMSU election so I would know who to vote for. Then they all started campaigning, which made me realize I hated them all equally and I voted for none of them.

Nobody who consumes the lectures I pay for with profanity-strewn commercials and blinding t-shirts gets my vote.

How hard are arts subjects (2nd/3rd year)- like sociology, criminology, anthropology type subjects? Is it difficult to get 86-87 + % altogether in subjects where the assessment is 2x 2000 word essays?

My girlfriend dragged me to the vote. Became a challenge. How fast can I vote? "Fuck Tony Abbott" tick. Ended up voting for a womens representative as well...oops. Couldn't even remember doing it.

lavalamp123, I haven't actually done any 2nd/3rd year arts subjects, but the mark probably depends mainly on the quality, relevance and caliber of the written tasks, though the subjectivity of the marking scheme in some arts subjects might be a disincentive if you aren't interested in the subject areas? Just do something you like!

Second what Levi said. I'd also add that there's a tendency for art students to have a whinge about their marking schemes (rightly so probably), because they're very subjective (as Levi suggested) and it can often be insurmountably difficult to get a high score. It does depend on the subject though, most of the time.

Disclaimer: if you choose to do a science breadth instead there are many science subjects in which very high scores are equally unusual (-most- first year subjects should be OK for a 90+ or 85+ if you work hard, though).

Also, I did two arts subjects (languages) which are apparently bell curved like regular arts subjects, but the nature of the course made it reasonably easy to get an H1 with a constant input of effort.

The Arts bell curve is a myth, unfortunately ):

I agree with what LL and Trav have said, choosing breadth you like is the best option. My highest scores have been from my breadth subjects incidentally, which definitely resulted from how much I enjoyed studying something fresh/newish.

It provides such a nice break from science, science, science. It's also great for "active procrastination". Putting study time into another subject...

In semester 1, I procrastinated by studying for my science cores instead of my breadth ones. Works both ways I guess ahaha

Wait, arts subjects aren't bell-curved? That makes me really happy (but now I have to question my tutor's knowledge of the grading system...) :3 (I'm sure some subjects must have their results scaled though, that happens in every faculty.)

For some subjects there's bell curve for individual assessments in terms of how many H1s can be given out, but with essay based Arts subjects your final grade isn't just a totalling of your scores on individual assessments, it's also how your tutor judges you against a certain standard (this is because of the 'subjectivity' of Arts, and something I've been told by multiple tutors). AFAIK there's no scaling of results, but there is cross marking if you give someone a score above 89 or below 50, and then they'll alter/leave the grade accordingly.

Non-essay based Arts subjects (ones with question and answer exams/short answer assignments) probably work differently given they're marked against specific criteria, but I haven't done any so I wouldn't know.
