I personally found her the opposite? I loved her in Chem 1 as the tutor :O

Each to their own I guess. Penny Commons FTW.

hey fellow GHS peeps

umm i don't know what Alison Trainer is talking about with 'Monogenetic conditions' in lecture 2. She describes it on the slide (100% penetrance during life etc.) but does she actually tell us what it is? 'Monogenetic conditions' brings up no real hits on google, 'monogenic conditions' does, of which I find stuff on Mendelian inheritance. But mendelian inheritance is the chit Dawn Gleeson taught us about last year, and I remember her saying that reduced penetrance is possible.

i'm confuzed

Not UoM, but I've also never heard 'monogenetic condition' before, but a monogenic condition is one due to alleles at a single locus. Not sure if it helps, but autosomal dominant monogenic conditions do exhibit incomplete penetrance (e.g. polycystic kidney syndrome)

Hey, I wrote down "The monogenetic view which suggests that mendelian inheritance underlies often rare, unusual and easily identifiable diseases". I think it just relates to biological determinism & how individual genes control human appearance/ behaviour. Not sure if this helps, i'd send Alison an email though to clarify!

Monogenetic = single gene locus causing the disease according to my GENE30001 lecture just now. Like for cystic fibrosis.

Yeah probably me and my friend. Idk if it was 2nd row but it was near the front.

lol now that I think about it there was another row below us.

So I won the guessing game? Where is my prize?!?!?!?

Also, most days days it's really inspiring, but other days I feel so drained/down/disheartened being constantly surrounded by people who are infinitely more
knowledgable, intelligent and accomplished than myself.... Some days it just sucks. :-/

Awh your grades are kickass, and you do it all alongside a demanding job in theatre. I think I enjoy it because without feeling that bloodthirsty grip of competition (within any context), personally all that's left is nihilism.

^ Yeah.

She used it to make the point that at the end of the spectrum opposite to teratogens (nurture-ish) we have monogenetic diseases (nature) that are fairly well known because they've been the easiest to study. Genetics is now moving onto understanding multifactorial diseases (where several gene loci are involved), like schizophrenia.

Hey Ballerina there's a girl in the ERC wearing a purple velour track suit (top and bottom) with diamanté on it. I have no idea why I thought of you but I did. I kind of thought if you saw it you'd be fascinated at its awe inspiring bad taste-ness or something.

Oh my God I am putting far too much effort into the Biological Psychology lab report. I just whittled 32 references down to 14. And it's only worth ~20%.

Come say hi next time you see me.

I'LL GREET YOU OR THAT COMPLETE STRANGER WITH A BEAR HUG

that sounds sublime. exquisite. pulchritudinous.

Oh my God I am putting far too much effort into the Animal Structure and Function pracs. I just spent several hours writing about 25% of the prac material from Week 3, and each prac is only worth ~2.5%.

also YES WATER BEARS ARE ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE (and it was Theresa who mentioned them in her lectures, under Tardigrada)
