Alondouek is my centrist soulmate

As a science student, I'm confident that I've thrown exceeding more violent tantrums than charmanderp or literally lauren combined

But I am not confident about my PHYS20008 midsemester test. According to Charles the first midsemester test usually averages 70% (the average was 21/30 this year), and the second midsemester test averages 50% lols.

Had to write a "full research essay" that was 750 words maximum including citations. Did not get any useful information about what they wanted us to say for an extremely broad topic. Was told by the coordinator to write it full-size and cut it down to 750. Note to everyone else: this DOES not work and will result in a terrible essay. Gave general or class-level examples due to the enormous scope of the prompt and was penalised for not using more specific examples in my 600 words of non-citation writing. I have no idea how I got 77, it was the worst thing I've written since Year 8. And the essay feedback is useless, the code tells me I wrote a clear, well-written and well-referenced essay so I don't even know what they wanted me to improve upon. But the plus side is that Animal Structure/Function assessments are over hHAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA I hate the world.
Do not do this subject.

Is it normal to get like zero feedback in a subject throughout the year? Like is this some kind of uni custom I'm not aware of?

In my lote breadth 70% of my mark has been decided across four assessments. The only things I've got back is a 15% test I had in like... week 4, which just said H2A on it.. I'm not that fussed about my marks, but I do want a H2A in the subject so I get an exchange scholarship, and I'm kind of worried I've been doing worse than that and won't find out til I get my semester mark back haha.

It is, but you absolutely have the right to ask for some sort of explanation in contact hours etc.
The uni staff for the subjects are actually obliged to help you out as much as they can if you ask them and it's within the policy guidelines. So I'm sure they'll be able to at least tell you how you're going. Not giving feedback for assignments is ridiculously stupid; the learning benefit is basically lost if you don't get to see what went wrong, so I'd give them an email or go see your tutor during consultation hour.

What do you mean by feedback?
Last year when I did jap, my assignments and test marks were uploaded onto the grade centre on the LMS. I got my tests back though so if you haven't gotten any of that back probably give the subject coordinator a message just in case?

Lol, my grade centre is empty. Not even the first test mark is on there. I just want like a couple of marks or something, like I don't even know what standard the uni expects of me..

Nah, I haven't gotten anything else back. We get all the tests etc. back on the day before swot vac apparently. If you've had a different experience with lote maybe it's just my tutor. It's a bit annoying, but also too late to really complain, I'll just wait a week and a half and maybe mention it in the subject feedback survey.

What language you doing? Mention it in the SES + message the coordinator about it. You never know, maybe your tutor is not up to date with everything.

Hey, I had a couple of questions about Studying Abroad.

someone suggested that i should not do breadth subjects, and save them for studying abroad.
however, I am planning on filling them all (possibly have an option of leaving 12.5 points out if I needed to, as I don't know what to do as a breadth in 3rd year).
Is this ccorrect?

Also, is it possible to study abroad w/out it effecting your GPA? ie, you do the subject or whatever, and not get a mark back or just something that says you passed.

and can you study abroad during our summer?

1. So you're asking if you should not do breadth at UoM but you want to do 5 subjects?  You should only be doing a maximum of 4 on exchange so if you wanted to do that then you would have to do at least one at UoM.  However I'd advise you to think carefully about 'saving all your breadth' for exchange - I'd instead probably do something like 50% breadth 50% coursework.  The reason being that a) I'm not even sure it's allowed to study 4 breadth and no degree cores in a semester (someone know the answer to this?  I suggest you clarify with your student centre) at UoM which means it similarly wouldn't be allowed overseas for UoM and b) part of the reason you go on exchange is to take the subjects they have on offer - related to your field of interest.  If you come back and in a job interview people ask you about your exchange and what you got out of it (and they will) you should be able to give some answers that include 'I learned about something RELEVANT TO MY MAJOR/DEGREE that wasn't offered at UoM and it was great'.  Going on exchange isn't just a 6 month holiday...although that is a big part of it :p

2. You cannot do that for Melbourne Uni.  When you go on exchange plenty of people will take P/F subjects especially if you go to the USA, but it's not allowed for Melbourne.  Or rather, it is allowed, if you want a P to be treated as a legitimate P at 50% and incorporated into your GPA.  Not the same as a P/F subject here where its excluded from the overall GPA as long as you passed, because your exchange GPA will count towards postgrad studies.  If you're not planning on further study you could look into this option if you didn't mind so much...but the fact that you're asking implies you do mind about GPA impact.  Similarly, there's usually a limit at the host institution as to how much study you can undertake at once P/F and it's usually not all of it in the semester/year anyway.

3.  You can do summer programs, summer subjects etc but it won't be an exchange program it will legitimately be study abroad if you want it to be entirely contained within summer.  Also remember that if you plan on crediting back it does count towards your 300 points so it won't be a way to include extra subjects - that includes study abroad.  All of the things I've said above so far relate to both exchange and study abroad - make sure you know the difference between those things.  Exchange refers to a partnership whereby there is a 'swap' of students 1:1 and therefore you only pay as much as your home institution (ie ~2000 per subject) and put it on HECS (presuming you're domestic).  Study abroad refers to a student-organised overseas study for which you get credit but it's not the same as exchange - you pay the entire thing yourself (up to 40 000 dollars a year if you go somewhere like the States) and it can be credited back.  With study abroad you usually don't have the same sort of 'privileges' you do as an exchange student - the university for instance wouldn't be obliged to find you on-campus accommodation which is a requirement for many exchange partners.
