Nope..Your HECS debt interest rate is going to increase up to a maximum of 6%.. This affects everyone and now we should probably pay off HECS debt first before saving up for a house. Mortgage and hecs debt interest rates are going to be very similar now -.-

My apologies. We still get charged fees under the current scheme, but you're right, the indexing does changes. Fucking arseholes.

That's right. As long as you don't take a break and get a CSP.

And stay at the same university, which is less relevant but still significant

^ I really want to join those ollllld secret societies on the campuses of ancient universities, like Skull and Bones from Yale. Oxford seems to have a dozen. Oxford > Cambridge  :-* Where is 90+FTW to back me up on this.

"PhD students will be required to “make a modest contribution towards the cost of their degree” because of a drop in government funding for the Research Training Scheme (RTS). Students will be offered access to HELP, which is cold comfort given there is no such obligation for PhD candidates to do this now. The budget documents suggest that “universities may choose to offer scholarships to cover these costs”. Sounds like a great incentive to have universities increase fees to cover this."

"The government will now require PhD and masters research students to pay contributions of $1700 and $3900 a year. While it is investing heavily in increasing the numbers with undergraduate qualifications, the number of PhDs and masters completions is expected to stay at 7400 to 2017."

^ That value excludes interest, however.

The budget doesn't seem to affect APAs, which is nice. But I wonder if it would affect MRSs indirectly...

I don't think I can do the Bachelor of Arts course at Melbourne Uni. as I honestly think that I do not have the talent to get the clearly in study score, which is 92+.... (so damn high).

I have a SEAS and I have heard that others have got in the 80s and still been accepted for this course. I am starting to get upset, as I have put in so much effort in my studies but I think that a clearly in is beyond me.

Dude come on! Just study hard and see how you go. You might suprise yourself just like many of us who were in similar situations in the past.
If you have SEAS and you've "have heard that others have got in the 80s and still been accepted for this course", wouldn't that be some sort of comfort to you???
If you don't get Melbourne Arts just go Monash or another institution, it's not the be all end all....

If you have SEAS application I do think you should be fine. there is no real need to get upset as it's only midyear and things can change so much between now and the final exams. And besides, I think other Universities offer better courses in the social sciences than Melbourne Uni does, so not getting into Arts isn't that bad.

In all honestly I don't think I'll surprise myself, I am a realist and I am already failing Further Mathematics which highlights my lack of logical ability. If I don't get 40's in English and Business Management then anything can happen. E.g. I have a Further Maths Exam (2) which is on the same day as Business Management (I am screwed) because Further Maths will just lower my self-esteem.

I put in a ton of effort for every subject, but Further Maths just gets on my nerves... I don't think the exam timetable nor the Year 12 environment suits an introverted person such as myself.

My aspirations for Melbourne are officially done! Not sure what to do now.

Hey come on now! Feeling sorry for yourself and blaming the timetable/environment/system isn't going to get you anywhere! You can totally do it. Even if you don't get into Melbourne there are heaps of stepping stones. Your atar is not the be all and end all AT ALL! Just keep working at the subjects you're good at and DO give it everything you've got to pass Further. If you do those things, heaps of opportunities will still be open to you and after 1 year at perhaps a different uni you will be able to transfer and get credit. You might even get straight in to Melbourne , but if not, your aspirations certainly aren't over, you'll be able to be there within 12 months and now even have lost much/any time.

Realist is honestly just another word for pessimist. You shouldn't get your confidence down based on one subject. It won't even count for that much in the end if it's that bad. Further to that, two exams on a day is not going to be a nightmare unless you tell yourself that it would be.

To be honest, you're more than welcome to predict that your chances are gone and you won't get in. If you keep believing that, undoubtedly you'll be right. If you try to convince yourself that it's still possibly, on the other hand, the worst you can do is improve your score.

Thanks for the quick responses notveryasian, Mr. T-Rav and thank you for the advice Nicola and Chicken. :D

And Chicken, I'm also doing Finance 1 and that has a hurdle for the exam (although the exam is already worth 80% of the assessment... 80% of an entire subject's outcome decided in just 2 hours is ridiculous lol)

I'm not really aiming for "just a pass", needa keep up the 65% average to get into Engineering lol

I was just curious because my RMIT friends were saying they need to get 45%+ on their exams to pass the subject so I was curious about Melbourne's requirements.
Most finance subjects have 70-80% final exams :'( in saying that though, if you know your stuff then you'll be fine in the exam. My advice would be go over every tutorial question and understand how to do every question - analyse the formulas and what each variable means - this is incredibly important when they quote figures in different time periods.

IMO don't aim to just achieve the 65 average. There are plenty of reasons, here are a few!
- The job market is extremely competitive these days, a 65 ave may be the minimum required to apply for some firms, but 'only' having a 65 ave will limit the grad jobs you can apply for. Some places will only look at your application if you have >75 - even in engineering. Furthermore, engineering opens some doors for you, you can consider moving into consulting/advisory, finance as some examples - which again are very competitive industries.
- Also, when applying for engineering vac work/grad programs your average is simply an average across all your subjects - there is no weighting. So your first year subjects are worth as much as your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th (except capstone which is worth 2x since it's 25 credit points) I think the weighting is only considered for applying for post graduate courses.
- If you want to go on exchange your average will determine where you can go. Due to demand some places require >80 ave.
- The higher level subjects require a good understanding of what you have learnt previously.

For what it's worth I hated ESD2 haha

I liked it, mostly. I disliked the Mechanical component a bit.... Boring as hell but if you've done Physics 1 it's a cinch.

It sounds as though you're interested in arts and humanities subjects, but are experiencing difficulty with math subjects (further mathematics + business). Neither of us have any idea what your ATAR will be and you may get in in the first round. If you don't, it follows that if you're much better at arts and humanities, then you will excel during a Bachelor of Arts at whatever university you choose, and will be in an ideal position to transfer to UoM later on. And if you're transferring into the same type of degree, you generally retain most if not all credits from first year. Especially if you choose subjects similar to those offered at UoM. Not to mention the dozens of summer classes available at UoM which are only two weeks long.

Alon, have you studied within the top levels at the State Library? I love looking down at the human snowflake below.
