Valjean makes a fair point. Become a neuroscience major. I've taken several statistics classes and at no point have done any real math, it's great

Is it true that some Spanish words are so similar that

Mi papá tiene 47 años= my dad is 47 years old
Mi papa tiene 47 anos= my potato has 47 assholes

?

Hahaha if I did English language I probably would've avoided "t"his whole ordeal

Everytime I bring that up that minor incident, I think I should mention something embarrassing I've done. Mmmm today I skipped breakfast and the 4 meals I usually have between lunch and breakfast, so when I went grocery shopping I just walked around putting things in my basket while eating from a box of cookies that I swear I put through the cash register. When I reached the extremely attractive cashier I was mid-way to putting the cookie in my mouth, and for some reason I panicked and put the whole thing in my mouth. And we had an entire polite conversation through that cookie and some crumbs fell out of my mouth I think :/ Calories don't count during SWOTVAC.

Pretty much. But it's not as similar as it looks. The difference between papa and papá is pretty close, though the pronunciation is still pretty different. So one's papa and the other papá (bolded for stress). And in the case of años and anos, you're actually replacing letters. ñ is a completely different letter all together (pronounced like ng in ing) than n (pronounced like n in English). It's the kind of thing you'd type incorrectly but wouldn't say incorrectly.

The worst I've done is, when speaking trying to speak French, substitute the French word for with (avec) with the Spanish word for with (con). Of course, the con in French means dick...

"non, je suis con mes amis"....No, I'm a dick, my friends

Philosophy
Handbook Link: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21B-ARTS-MAJ%2B1028

Philosophy seems to be a great major if you love the idea of studying and knowledge. I'd be wary about picking this degree up if you don't intend on doing a professional postgrad, as it might be hard to market your degree to potential employers.

Media and Communications
Handbook Link: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21D09-AA-MAJ%2B1000

This is probably the closest major to Journalism, and looking at the subject list it seems pretty interesting.

Politics and International Studies
Handbook Link: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21B-ARTS-MAJ%2B1029

If you were to do a Politics/Philosophy double major then I reckon you'd have a pretty interesting (content-wise) 3 years at uni. This looks like a decent major for you as you're doing well in VCE Politics.

Economics
Handbook Link: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21B-ARTS-MAJ%2B1013

This is the closest you're going to get to Business, as straight Business is only offered in BCom (and sounds very very vague).

Be warned you have to do Introduction to Mathematics because you haven't done Methods, and then you will have to do Quantitative Methods 1 as part of the major.

This is a question from a past Quantitative Methods exam
(Image removed from quote.)

and here's a bit of the formula sheet
(Image removed from quote.)

If maths isn't your strong suit then this might be a bit of a challenge.

List of all BA majors can be found here, and course structure here

Thank you so much everyone! :) Really appreciate and commend the UoM students for helping me out with my queries.

I apologise for not really appreciating every comment made and/or replying, but I have read every single post since these queries.

E.g. Year 12 and just general stuff took over my time, but I wanted to say thank you to every user as I have read everything related to my post/s, eventually...

If I may I'll just say thank you to Valjean for this post, I will be sure to have a look at the related resources.

Yeah philosophy is not really an employment pursuit of mine, however, I would love to study this as I am intensely interested in this subject area.

In regards to economics, I have read that the maths formula/example can be learnt even if one finds maths difficult. I'll just say that it was nevertheless worthy to see what I potentially could contend with if I enter this course. Alas, my confidence of getting 90+ is quite slim in my opinion, more so 80 - 88 range.

To a previous comment before, my SEAS is not for financial disadvantage etc I am aware of the fact that some specific SEAS categories can alter the course ATAR. It will stay the same, not to get to personal or anything (just willing to know my chances here in terms of consideration) I suffer from depression.

If I get slightly above the minimum ATAR in 85-86 but not the 92+ clearly in, would a SEAS and something such as a mental illness actually come into consideration? I really hope that this is the case...

Would be willing to know if anyone got in this course without getting the clearly in?

Also, I went to my careers teacher and I questioned why I picked further maths (I had no idea what I wanted to do in Year 12). Obviously the Arts course doesn't require Maths, but apparently it is worthwhile for business courses at Monash (e.g. 25+ for Further Maths prerequisite). Could one argue that Arts/Business, Journalism/Business would be more valuable (for someone like me) who is intensely interested in some Arts majors and also the business side of things?

Of course, I'd choose Melbourne if had the choice. I am a little upset that I didn't pick legal studies over maths, and the only solace I can get from this is that it keeps those Business subjects open. But I know that Arts itself does not require Maths and has those business subjects as well... Was it still a good decision to pick further maths??

Thanks for everyone's consideration and messages of clarity thus far, much appreciated :)

I always thought it was the other way round. It's, potentially because, its usage is more like dick. Just doesn't have that nasty weight that "the opposite" (she who must not be named) does. So even if you say "t'es un con" it would be more sensibly translated to "you're a dick".
Really feeling like I've had a massive gap in my knowledge of French with that hahaha. It's amusing how it's masculine though, like le vagin, which for some reason is also masculine...

The construction être con is really just a crude way of calling someone stupid -- moron, imbecile, idiot, etc. You could substitute "dick" or "dickhead" at a stretch, but those words can also have connotations that con doesn't, so it would be situational. The literal meaning of un con is indeed c**t but it's rarely used that way.

haha it is quite a good one, isn't it? But 'un con' is quite literally:

Spoiler
a cunt

both in a descriptive and a pejorative sense. However, I can see where the confusion arises because it is used to mean anything from dumbass to a jerk to the female genitalia.

For example, I had a good laugh when we watched 'Le Diner des Cons' in French in Year 12, because although it was anglicised as 'The Dinner of Fools' we all knew what it actually meant, which was a far more apt title given the theme of the film :P

The literal meaning of un con is indeed c**t but it's rarely used that way.

Really? When I was in France this was the most common usage, even with the 'etre'; "etre con' was often said as "ne pas etre un con!" with all the required hand gestures.

Especially at PSG v Marseilles, that was the best spread of profanity I've ever heard first hand hahahahaha

My Spanish friends only taught me the words mari con, puta and te amo.

Maybe that's why i'm not good at making new Spanish friends.

I think it's clear you want to come to Melbourne (with good reason, I jumped at the opportunity to leave Perth) and Monash would just be a fallback option that you are trying to justify. Everyone that I know second guessed themselves and thought they'd get a much lower ATAR than they actually did, as I said before you still have a very long time to prepare and bring your marks up to where they need to be.

No study tactic works exactly the same for everyone so once term 2 ends, maybe try and test out a few different methods to see what works best for you and will allow you to effectively and efficiently reach the goal you have set for yourself (BA at Melbourne).

It's hard to say what the clearly-in ATAR will be for your year group with the possible drastic change in demand. I had a friend who was over the moon when she received her ATAR of 92.1 with the thought she would get into Arts at Melbourne, as the clearly-in for 2013 was 91.40, then obviously it increased a lot and she didn't make it. It is always going to be tough to predict these factors that are out of your reach so just try and do your best and take control of the things that you can directly influence.

You do have the choice! I'll say it again and again, it is not too late to lift your marks and surprise yourself when exams come around.

One could definitely argue that Arts/Business might be better for you. It does seem like you'd be settling for Monash though, and a Journalism/Economics double major at Melbourne could be just as good if not better for you.

During the next holiday break do some research into what each course entails and how suited you think you might be to them. Also head to the Open Day for each uni to see what the feel of the campus is like. It doesn't matter now but I didn't go to any open days last year and I definitely regret that...

Please don't give up on Melbourne this early in the year when there's still so much time  :D

You could always do a Bachelor of Environments for a semester and then internally transfer to Arts?

Yes, I will most definitely go to the university open days. Melbourne is my true ambition, whether I can get to it is honestly I think out of my control and potentially my ability also. Some of my friends reckon I can get 90+ but the big problem is I don't. E.g. I am failing Further Maths and Maths is a sign of good intelligence at least. Again, the technicalities matter because if I don't get 40's for English and Business Management then I cannot get into Melbourne, simple, also need 33+ for eco + politics.

To be honest I never thought I'd be in with a chance at Melbourne. Even if it is only a very slim chance, I guess I can hold my head high about that.

You are correct in saying that Monash university is more so a fall-back option, I am just pumping it up for my self-esteem....

Also that is quite interesting that your friend got 91 and even though this is slightly below the BArts, it still didn't get accepted? I know a friend of mine who said that this person he knew got in with a mid 80's score with no SEAS or anything like that. But different subjects get boosted up I guess.

To be honest I just hate the competitive nature of VCE at the moment. I just want to go to university ASAP, but I have to bide my time like everyone else.

Depends who's doing the talking I suppose; it's a really hard word to translate properly. (Maybe that's why they included the hand gestures?)

Also remember Sarkozy? There was a lot of interest and debate in the press about this one:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casse-toi,_pauv'_con_!

If our PM called someone a c**t I doubt there would be much debating going on, haha
