Hey guys, for those who have done Eng Mathematics, how would you compare it to calc 2 in terms of difficulty, workload etc? Will it be necessary to do some prestudy in the holidays?

Easier than Calc 2. Similar workload or less. No pre study required if you were confident ish with Calc 2

How's everybody going on for subject selection now that registration starts on Monday? I have yet to firmly finalize my decisions, but I hope they are good ones.

Yep! :)

How did NEUR30002 go for you though El? It' s one of the things I'm considering doing besides M&E, which I'm aware you're not exactly fond of.

For those out there who have done PHRM20001 or PATH20001, how was it? I'm tossing up between these two and I can't seem to make a definitive decision. For the PATH20001 CAL tasks/tests, were they difficult at all? Were the 2 MSTs difficult? Which one did you guys find more enjoyable? (assuming you guys have taken both but if not I'd be very grateful for your opinions!)

Here are my reviews of the pharmcology subject:
PHRM20001 - Re: University of Melbourne - Subject Reviews & Ratings

There are some other reviews on both of the subjects as well, but personally, I think PHRM20001 is the best subject I've ever taken so far. I know a bunch of people (myself included) that only took this subject to fill in a blank space in our timetable, and were intending to major in physiology or human structure and function, but after completing it we all switched to the pharmacology major.

Pathology was okay, but it was really 'messy'. It requires the sort of rote learning that isn't easily linked. A lot of the time you have to memorise a bunch of symptoms, pathways and causes of diseases without understanding why an underlying condition leads to a particular clinical presentation, so it's hard to properly appreciate and fully understand what you're learning. But it's a pretty easy subject to do well in if you get over that, it's just that studying it is super annoying imo, and a lot of my mates feel the same way.

I studied a lot more for Pathology and got a slightly worse score. The CALs are pretty easy to do well in as well, since you have time to google anything you don't know.

The biggest difference between pharmacology and pathology is that pharm uses a lot more applied learning. You need to understand basic concepts and pathways then learn how to manipulate them, so as a result you don't need to spend as much time studying it. In pathology, however, you can just memorise every little detail and spew it out on the exam, and that will be good enough if you put in enough time.

I'll try put up a review for that over the next week! :)

Practice your integration by parts, partial fractions and change of variables - they were all used a lot throughout the course.
As hobbitle said it's probably easier than calc 2

Thanks so much nubs! I'm so indecisive, I initially had PHRM then I swapped to PATH now I'm tossing up between PHRM + GENE2002 :(
The assessment and all looks so much easier for genetics but yeh they both sound so interesting (I thoroughly enjoyed genetics in BIOL1005 last year).
BSc (2015), MD1 (2016)
Tutoring in 2016: http://www.tutorfinder.com.au/tutors/detail.php?TutorID=78301
Chuck a PM if interested :)

Available for tutoring on the summer holidays for university subjects or VCe.
Also tutoring for the Melbourne uni MMIs (medical/physiotherapy interviews)

Please don't PM me for lecture slides or recordings. I don't have them anymore.

The only thing in BIOL10005 that comes up in GENE20002 is just DNA structure/replication really, we rarely encountered pedigrees/crosses in GENE20002

May I ask what is covered in the subject? I've read the subject reviews etc but there isn't as much there :(
Did you enjoy it ?

Email them. They'll have to do it manually, but you don't have to go in.

Should only take a few days.

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

Timetabling is 9am monday and my study plan is messed up so I won't be able to choose lecture/tutorial times for 2 of my subjects :/
It's probably best I go to the science student centre on monday 9am in that case.

May I ask what is covered in the subject? I've read the subject reviews etc but there isn't as much there :(

I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as nubs enjoyed PHRM20001

Looking at the handbook (+ other stuff i've added)
Molecular basis of gene structure and expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes (e.g. lac operon in prokaryotes); the processes of DNA replication, mutation (spontaneous/induced- different types of mutation) and recombination; the methods used for gene isolation, analysis (GWAS, next generation sequencing- this stuff is the most boring); and application to genetic problems, an introduction to the fundamental genetic principles underlying development and the molecular evolution of genes and genomes.

YES
YES
YES
YES

CONGRATULATIONS ON DRINKING THE NEURONAL ELIXIR OF LIFE AND YOUR JOURNEY TOWARD BECOMING A NEUROSCIENCE DEITY

Have you tried here?
https://prod.ss.unimelb.edu.au/student/SM/StudyPlanDtls20.aspx?r=%23UM.STUDENT.APPLICANT&f=%24S1.EST.STUDYPLN.WEB

I have the neuroscience major on my study planner, whereupon it prods me to enroll in the core units + neuroscience electives for the full 50 credit points needed for the major.

Having done both CogPsych and Biochem/Molecular Biol AND now doing research, I would probably choose Biochem out of the two. It will be good for you to have that sort of background if you do research! And I think I enjoyed it slightly more.
Having said I enjoyed it more, I now anticipate that you might choose CogPsych :P

Thank you for the input! Haha I looked through the lectures for both awhile ago, and glazed over for the biochem content. I'm not a very abstract person, which is why surprisingly Comparative Nutrition and Digestion worked out better than Animal Physiology. But! Animal Physiology would have been the more practical choice, despite being less interesting personally. It's the same choice again this semester, interesting subject I would do better in vs. a pragmatic, important subject that is a superior long-term investment. Biochem is essential for research and if I'm any type of adult I would enroll in it

But, nyeeeehh. Nyeeh nyeeeeeeeeeeh nyeeeh

I guess so, especially to swap some of the slots for the subjects as well, esp the ones that you have already done and can't swap by yourself.

I'm oblivious. But I am throwing an inauguration party for our new favourite neuroscience major, this is so exciting. GO TEAM BRAINS.

Sinner, how would you feel about studying the very foundation of human connection and self-awareness, as well as discovering the impossibly paradoxical biology which permits you to introspect, inquire, feel and love?

So here are my final marks for a subject

Journal   78/100   20%   15.6

A1          77/100   20%   15.4

A2          84/100   25%   21

A3          72/100   25%   18   (never been more disappointed with an assessment :()

15.6+15.4+21+18+9.5 = 79.5

Then I have 2.5 bonus marks, does this just add on to make my final grade 82?

Just out of curiosity, is the subject you're referring to here Reshaping Environments? Because the mark allocation you mentioned here is the same for that subject.
In answering your question, yes I guess that could be your final mark.
