All you Psych kids - how much prereq knowledge would be needed to do well i.e. high H1 in Personality and Social Psychology? Anyone have any recommended study (that I'll probably never but it's the thought that counts) for someone who's never done psych before?

I would say that the most important thing would be to know how to write lab reports in APA formatting as that can take some time to get used to. Reading up on a few psych journal articles and noting how they format the report will go a long way in making sure that you've followed the referencing requirements correctly when it comes to writing your own report. I wouldn't be too worried about statistics as luckily, you only need to know how to interpret correlations which I reckon is the easiest of the 4 different statistical methods taught in 2nd year psych subjects. Other than that, I honestly don't think that there is too much assumed knowledge needed.

I haven't written a review up myself but the two reviews already up there are definitely worth a read as they go through everything that the subject covers. If you're really ambitious, you could even start reading up on some of the topics that are covered like moral psychology, personality theory etc.

I can't recommend the subject enough, it was my favourite of the 2nd year psych subjects and I would say that it is the most accessible for anyone who doesn't have a psychology/scientific background. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to PM me or any of the other two reviewers for the subject.  ;)

If I was too keen and wanted a head start to Human Physiology, would it be useful to listen to the 2014 semester 1 lectures or would it be a waste of time? ie is the content for semester 1 and semester 2 identical?

I'm pretty sure the content will be the same for semester 2 (looking at past assessments, it's stayed the same over the last few semesters) but I don't think you need to bother listening to the lectures now. The content is not complicated and I think Charles will present the lectures very similarly. You'd be better off doing the pre-reading before each lecture if you want to be ahead.

Personality and Social Psych is a pretty cool subject! Just make sure you revise how to write a lab report according to APA standards :) Also, in terms of statistics, you'll use a statistical package called SPSS (which no one really understands so dw LOL). In terms of actual statistics, we mainly covered correlations and a bit of simple regression last year (you're required to be able to interpret the statistical findings for the lab report but it's nothing too complicated if you just pay attention when they teach the stats part of the course). Also, I'm not sure how much of a psych background you have, but it's also good to understand the concept of the p-value of statistical significance (i.e. p<0.05 = statistically significant and the results support the experimental hypothesis and therefore the null hypothesis is rejected; and p>0.05 = NOT statistically significant) as it is essential to mention whether your results were or weren't significant in your lab report and elaborate on potential reasons for the results being significant/non-significant in your discussion section :) You will also come across a CRAZY amount of studies in the subject so be prepared to be able to distinguish between them (that said, the content is really straightforward and super interesting so you shouldn't find it daunting or anything like that :) ). It's a very "memory-based" psych subject in my opinion and also provides really interesting insights into human nature :)

Oh and I wrote a more detailed subject review for Pers & Social Psych last year hahah:

There was one topic in muscles they cut out when I was doing human phys in semester 2 last year because the sem 1 students found it too confusing, but the content should be at least 90% the same. I would say it's a waste of time in the sense that you should enjoy the limited amount of holiday time you have!

Hey El, I don't need your personal lecture notes or anything. It's just that they changed the textbook this year but I only have the old ones, so am looking for the equivalent reference chapters. I'd like do some study over the holidays if possible!

Hey El2012, so sorry if I've already asked you this, but what's the deal with the Chem2 offer?  Do you get an email or something and then accept the offer online so that you can enrol in Chemistry 2?  Or do you need to do it through the student centre?  Presumably they only send offers out after the official results release date?

Ooh it looks like ChickenCh0wM1en has got the readings covered. :)

I got an email explaining the offer and you had to present that to the student centre so that they could add it to your study plan. Then you enrol in the chem2 classes during the staggered release period. Not sure what time offers should come out by, I think I received mine close to when I had my result like a couple days later or something.

It's that time of year again; the day you realise you've forgotten 90% of course content from the preceding semester :( Or is it just me?
I like when that happens! It gives your mind a break. When you learn similar stuff in the next semester at least half of it you have some memory of, otherwise you can just look back at your notes to jog your memory.
