(I'm speaking as a UROP student here - I have no special insight into the selection process, other than the fact that I was selected.)

I applied at the start of second year, so I just had my first year marks. I had an average of ~78, but higher marks in chemistry and biology (low H1 average) which was what I stated I wanted to be placed in. Maths pulled me down. I only had the subjects you'd do as part of a standard first year (chem and bio,) and I didn't do any prac subjects in the semester I was selected (mistake, in retrospect.)

I had attended a couple of science camps in high school (including one overseas,) and had some science-related extracurricular stuff (namely, tutoring high school students and acting as a TA for high school science teachers.)

Really, they are more interested in seeing if you're actually interested in research, so the interview is much more important year. They don't want people doing it just for the money/because it looks good on a CV/because it looks good on a med school application.

Lol physics labs. Some of the demonstrators will mark your pracs harshly, some leniently.

I would get scores mainly ranging from 7-9/10 (mostly 8/10), while a fair few of my friends with other demonstrators would get 9/10 and some of them still got H2A. They aren't really an accurate portrayal of how well you'll go in the subject, focus on smashing the exam.

I got asked for an interview the first time I applied (April of my 2nd year). I didn't get through but I had come from no science background so I wasn't surprised not to be selected. Hopefully at least an interview again this round. I was an 82% average then (like Mahler, maths pulled me down a bit), it's a little higher now.
They did tell me outright that as a mature aged student I had a much higher chance of acceptance by the third round than a school leaver undergrad. They asked some pretty tricky and unexpected questions in the interview and it's very focused on what you've done in your course so far and whether or not you've critically thought about what you've learned.

Between the 13th July - 25th August, Monash University, Melbourne University and Deakin University are competing to see which university can donate the most blood. It would be really nice to destroy Deakin I-mean-save-the-lives-of-leukemia-and-trauma-patients, so please consider. If you need someone to hold your hand, my appointment will be longer as I'm donating plasma (if you've donated whole blood in the past 12 weeks, you'll have to donate plasma instead) and I can stick around. Donating plasma is really neat, your blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. Your red blood cells are returned to you at room temperature, which gives the most interesting shivery-cold sensation.

I promise whole blood donations are nowhere near as weird as that. They are short in duration and you're stuffed full of free muffins, milkshakes and sausage rolls at the end.

For interests sake, I got an interview and then got rejected and then got offered some random 'last minute' project a week after my rejection letter.  So like, grades aren't every-thang.

I had good marks (~90 average for science) when I applied at the beginning of my second year. Besides that, my essay had mentioned many of the science related things I had done (experiments with my dad as a child, enrichment programs during primary school holidays, helping out others/tutoring during high school). During the interview they were mostly interested in what subjects I was doing at the moment and what I liked about them - I answered classical mechanics, because from a very simple and elegant description of a system you can uncover and explain lots of really interesting dynamics - and was placed in a bioengineering lab at MCRI/RCH.

It seems like people in the Law School can't use the toilet properly. In the stalls there's posters showing you how to sit properly on the toilet, is this all around UniMelb or just the law students who don't know how to use it properly?

they're so horrendous ghghghghghghghghaasdfjflkaslksjgsdf ;_; I went in there once. Once. Pretty sure I got at least 752 STDs the moment I walked in.
