To be honest, I thought the reason was so it coincides with the school holidays, giving families some time to spend altogether. Not really sure though.
My break clashing with my sister's school holidays is the last thing I would want.

But seriously, while that would be a very good reason I'm not sure if it's the only reason as there wasn't an overlap last semester. There are a bunch of factors that go into it is say, like the timing of the AFL Grand Final, Uni Games, school holidays, etc.

What an awesome 'break' it was!

Managed to squeeze some time into the PS4 amid hours of watching every MIIM20002 lecture again in 1.6-1.8x. Insane workload compared to GENE20001 last semester. Probably a good time to start prep for the second HSF MST now.

Out of curiosity, what are the reasons for people doing summer/winter subjects?

I know the main one is to compensate for a failed subject throughout the year, but is there anything else?

I did some of my breadth subject in summer and winter so I could focus on my main subjects during the semester. It also means I have less hours this semester :)

^

yeah lots of people do that, so they only have to worry about 3 subjects that semester

Also, I was looking for a summer or winter breadth/research subject because I'm looking at doing a concurrent diploma and want to see if I can fit all 350 points into 3 years without having to overload more than necessary. Summer subjects would help with that.

Ah fair enough, so it's similar to doing a unit 3/4 subject in year 11?
(Reduced workload year 12 --> possibility of better marks?)

I guess, but it might just be for more time/less workload than specifically for the marks, like you might specifically want less contact hours to pursue something else like my friend who wanted to take a piano exam this semester, so he got his uni physics he did in VCE credited to only need to do 3 subjects this semester.

Oh okay I didn't think of that, what diploma you looking at?

Major in Computing with a Diploma in Maths (applied maths maybe), or a diploma in informatics with some other maths/physics major in my actual BSc. I have no idea!

To take the load off normal semester :) So instead of doing 4 subjects during the normal semester, I'd do 3 and a summer/winter intensive. Plus, I find the summer break quite long - so I don't mind doing a subject during then.

Don't underestimate the advantages of reducing your study load in the main semesters to 3 subjects instead of 4. It makes a LOT of difference especially if you save it for when you start taking Level 3 subjects.

Yeah I doubt I would have survived UROP hours if I hadn't had a semester @ Lvl 3 with only 3 subjects instead of 4. Made things much nicer.
But that was due to my course transfer and me saving the three subject semester till the end, not to do with me taking a summer/winter sub.

I have done a summer and a winter subject and the reason was so i would have more time to study for the GAMSAT this semester and next semester. I cant believe how much doing one less subject has made a difference

Stupidly I took my breadth credits in first and second year, with the intent of "easing myself back into Uni". I suppose that did serve it's purpose but next year I'm looking at two 4xL3-subject semesters and am perhaps regretting that slightly!

Summer subjects are sometimes also much easier than their in-semester equivalents. Inter Micro is an example of this.

Speaking as someone who can tell you the difference a subject makes by going from four to five subjects, one subject is a HUGE difference in workload. Seriously. The amount I'm behind by because I've had to study for a particular subject's mid sem...

And yeah, maths diploma for me too, hence why I'm doing subjects over summer as well. Hi silverpixeli xD
