Doesn't really affect me since I get extensions, but do tutors actually practice the 10% penalty per working day rule for assignments?

Was told by a tutor (who is a sub coordinator) in private that no one does that, there are other ways of penalising if it's very late like one week, such as marking it more harshly especially if it's sloppy work, but it won't be as bad as 10% per day.

I've literally seen the marking for assignments where the marks add up to 90%, then it has a "-10% for 1 day late" and it becomes 80%.

The subjects taught by that tutor you spoke to might very well work how he says though. In university there is a crazy high amount of flexibility given to subject co-ordinators (within limitations). Different subjects are run and graded very differently. Especially across departments. So in general if you are warned of a 10% per day deduction I would take it seriously.

America has the most freedom though. I forgot to fucking hand in an assignment due on a saturday and on monday I went up to the teacher after class and was like "im sorry miss I completely forgot the assignment was due on Saturday. I didn't even realise until class today." and shes like "alright give in to me by wednesday midnight" and in my head i was like "what the fuck thats lit" and I got no deductions. Meanwhile my in my dorm mates poli sci class if you submitted something 1 minute after the deadline you insta failed it. Shit was crazy

Hi. I was just wondering, what are truly the pros and cons of studying at Melbourne Uni? So far I've found out that Melbourne Uni may not entirely be what I've been expecting. I'm hoping to study undergrad science, but I've heard pretty mixed reviews, from people loving it, to people dropping out. I just want to find out info about the teaching style, the workload and overall level of enjoyment.

Thanks!
Clarisse :)

Depends on what you want to get out of your time at uni. Main pro of degree is that it's good for those who aren't really sure what they want to do so you can really get a taste of anything in science. That being said, you don't get the same security as you do say in an engineering degree at monash for example. Given it's a pretty broad degree, you're pretty much expected to do a masters afterwards if you want to actually have skills that make you employable. Science is also a pretty massive cohort so it might seem a bit isolating but don't think that's much of an issue if you have a close group of friends. Teaching style is dependent on the units you're taking and really hard to generalise, yes, there are some terrible lecturers but a lot of good ones too. Workload is pretty subjective but I've heard it's manageable.
tldr, if you don't have a specific idea of what you want to do yet then science should be good, otherwise, just skip the melbourne model altogether

Hi. I am currently studying for the Mind Brain and Behaviour II Exam and was just wondering if the textbook theory has made a big impact on the exam in previous semesters. Is it a big part of the questions asked or is it really just the lectures. I am a bit concerned as some of the textbook references are like 20-30 pages long and it is quite hard to memorise. Thanks in advance!

GAMSAT scores are out today. What would a reasonable score be for entry to Melbourne Medical School?

Good luck to everyone receiving them today. It's a very nervous time.

It really depends on a number of factors. The higher your GAMSAT, the lower can be your interview and GPA. Likewise, the higher your GPA, the lower your GAMSAT can afford to be. Rural vs metro also has some involvement too. Rural kids get through on lower combined scores, and can therefore afford to have a lower GAMSAT.

I'd be happy with high 60s as providing a reasonable opportunity, 70s providing a very strong one.

Uh 2019 subject selection thread doesn't exist so I'll post here.

Anyone have any reasoning of why I would choose "Probability for Statistics" over just "Probability"? They are both prereqs for Statistics.

Which would give a more wholesome experience?

I did Probability and Statistics this year, and from what I've understood Probability has a more theoretical focus, and is generally considered harder. Probability has also had some very difficult exams over the past few years , which doesn't seem to be changing (Not too sure about what the Prob for Stats one is like). However based on how I felt I went vs my score, I believe they scaled it quite generously, and I also know of some people who still got H1s, so if you're up for a challenge and enjoy rigorous maths that'd probably be a good reason to go for Probability.

In terms of prerequisites, apart from slightly different use of notations, they both pretty much provide everything you need for Statistics/MAST20005. However, if you were wanting to do the Stats/Stochastic Processes major, the elective subject MAST30020 (Probability for Inference) requires at least 70 in Prob for Stats if you chose that one (Which I'm sure would be doable too)

Im finishing Friday ! Even though its the last day of exams, I would rather have my exams more spread out even if it meant a longer exam period
