Apparently 30% of students fail chemistry 2? Does anyone want to confirm or deny this?

I don't think that's true. It's probably more a case of failing the exam. It's not worth worrying about though.

Well, I don't know exact percentages but I'd estimate that a H1 average is around top 5-8% probably? I know USyd scales their HD's so that only that top 3% can get one.

A hard statistic I have is that a 91 in ESD1 was in the top 1.4% of students and an 86 was the top 6%. So, take what you will from that info.

Depends on the course.

In my course I know that (for the exams that is) top 30% is 68-69.

As for year level average I think 85 was top 5% around ish.

They post the prac stuff on the LMS and you just print it off!  Same for all of the 'tutorials' which are just like workbooks - self printing as they're released so don't worry about buying any books :)

Hancock, just out of interest where did you get these stats?

And I have heard that Calc 2 and Chem 2 have significant fail rates. Not sure on the exact figures but seriously, the majority of people here are probably at least above average academic achievers, so if you look at this site regularly you could be tricked into thinking that very few failed.

I've definitely heard of several people failing Calc and Chem 2. Not to mention second year physiology and anatomy.

Chem 2 was hard, students definitely had their work cut out with them. However, if you were prepared to get help and practice heaps of questions there was no reason you could not H1 the subject.

I know of two people that failed Calc 2 personally. One got a 41 and the other got a 49 (ouch). If you don't know/can't understand the material about ODEs (which make up half the course), you are kinda screwed for the exam.

A mate got 47 in Calc 1, then 27.

Somewhat hilarious.

So glad I changed my mind about taking Calc 2 this upcoming semester.

For biology or biochemistry-oriented subjects, which method of studying and notekeeping do you guys find more efficient and effective? Printing out lecture notes and then adding additional notes on them, or copying (with understanding of course, or summarizing) them onto a seperate notebook or laptop of your own formatting?

I once thought of that but gave up when I found I didn't really enjoy chem that much as other fields :P

Would you also be interested in Medicinal Chemistry? If so you might wanna think about choosing some pharmacology subjects as well for 2nd and 3rd years.
