As mentioned before, it is 4-6 weeks.

You enrol for a summer subject through the study plan later in the year when you re-enrol.  You just select which semester you want to do it in.

OK. i just thought summer semester = 6 weeks, while the ones that say "January" or "February" are the 4 week ones. Thanks!

Hey, can I intrude to ask a small question? :3

When subjects are classified as level 2 (as an example), does that mean they're for second year students, or do you have to do a level 1 subject in that area before you do it? I'm a little bit confused :/

If a subject has pre-requisites, you cannot do the subject until you've passed the pre-requisites.

If a subject has no pre-requisites, then you can complete the subject.

There's no limitations on what year you have to be in, or what year level the subject is - you can attempt the subject.

Case in point, one of my friends accidentally attempted a 3rd year arts history subject in his 1st semester of science at Melbourne Uni because he didn't know it was a 3rd year subject, and he wasn't very good at English. He went to his lecturer and the lecturer explained there's nothing stopping him from doing the subject, but that he probably wouldn't do very well in it as my friend is self-confessedly "not very good at English". He switched out and picked up another 1st year breadth.

But there wasn't anything stopping him from going ahead.

Although they might not have any prerequisites, level 2 or 3 subjects (Arts ones at least) generally assume you're pretty well versed in writing essays and won't offer you as much guidance as the level 1 subjects.

I know I almost considered doing Age of Stalin (Level 3 History subject) in my first semester of uni. It had no prerequisites or recommended background knowledge, but I was strongly advised not to take it since I had never written a history essay before, and by taking a level 3 subject, the assessors would have assumed that you'd be quite familiar with the structure or whatever else you'd need to employ, as well as research techniques, to write a decent essay for that discipline, so they'd be much harsher in marking you.

What're the benefits of a summer subject? Can you knock out a breadth or something?

You can do a subject over the summer and then only have to do 3 subjects during any other regular semester and take it easy. Also if you fail a subject in the regular semester, you might have a chance to do it over summer so you don't have to stay at uni for an extra semester.

I did chemistry two over the summer, where they took 12 weeks worth of lectures and tutorials and put them into 6 weeks. It was actually pretty chill, and supposedly the exam was much easier than the one chemistry two students had to do in the regular semester.

Or you might just really want to do a certain subject but it's only offered in the summer period.

Nope, only some
This is a list of the ones offered for 2013's summer period

Most of them should be offered for 2014's as well but there might be a few changes

Look at the handbook entry and find out whether they're hurdles or not

There's no hurdle requirement but there's 10% participation marks, so if you don't attend you can't get those marks. Doing well in the weekly tests alone won't get you 10/10 I don't think
