It's only embarrassing if you think it's embarrassing. Really is nothing to be embarrassed about. Something to be disappointed about, on the other hand, perhapssss.
Besides, any one who would look down at you for not doing as well as themselves would be in dire need of an attitude change. Really shouldn't be any room for that crap at uni.

How does getting assignment marks back work? Specifically for practicals in CHEM10007 and BIOL10004, and assignments in MAST10006 and Intromicro?
Subjects
2012: English [37], Biology [41], Specialist Maths [33], Methods [39], Physics [37]; ATAR [94.65]

Your tutor will let you know in class when they finish marking them. If your subject has a 'grades' link on the lms then they put them online there too. That's how it works for micro and calc.

Also, for those interested in summer subjects quite a few of them are 2 week intensive courses if you're interested.

A bit of a random question here, but what sort of grades should I be aiming to get during first year? Is it worth the effort to try and get the best marks or is getting straight H1s for each subject good enough?

The only case where you would be looking for high H1s would be for overseas exchanges afaik, good to aim high though nonetheless.

Straight H1s should be sufficient because in the end getting 80 is literally worth the same as getting 100.

You could try be a gun if you really want to though (there are some people here who average 90+)

Thank you, this was what I was after. So there's no real difference between an 80 and a 100 - both get you a H1?

They'll both get you a H1, but the higher the raw score is the better it will be for your average.

Okay so yes there is technically no real difference between 80 and 100.  HOWEVER, if you appreciate things like the Dean's honours list in first year, any kind of major/department based award in second year or third year and the prospects of going to a high demand school on Exchange (like Berkeley for an example) then you might want to aim higher.  Or just for personal satisfaction if you are more Type A inclined like...some of us may be.

Plus if you manage to get in the 90s - you might find yourself the recipient of a subject prize (ie. for highest grade in class). Not only is there a nice little cash bonus (about $500 - which isnt too bad....until you consider the ~9k you fork put p/yr on hecs); but you also get to meet a lot of potential employers at the awards ceremony. PLUS it looks great on your CV.

So excited when I managed to snag one myself! ^.^
