Just curious, are exams held in the Royal Exhibition Building? Last time I went there was like 5 years ago wow

Depends on the exam. Most big exams (especially for first year big-subject science exams e.g. chem, calculus, bio, physics) are held in the Royal Exhibition Building. Smaller exams are often held in tute rooms at uni, for instance my Russian exams were held at uni. Intermediate exams (maybe ~300 people) are often held in Wilson Hall in the centre of campus.

I'm doing commerce. So in theory, your 1st year subjects are as important as your 3rd year subjects?

In theory, your first year subjects are as important as the institution you are applying to makes them out to be. If you apply to an institution which doesn't evaluate subjects differently, then yes, first year subjects are worth exactly the same as third year subjects. If you apply to an institution which weighs your GPA in a specific way (e.g. GEMSEAS for Med, Dentistry, etc), then your first year subjects will count for half as much as your 2nd year subjects, and a third of your 3rd year subjects. It depends on the institution you are applying to and how they weigh up your GPA.

Where do you want to apply?

In the large majority of cases, first year marks don't mean anything.

To quote Rio Tinto: "Graduate positions (for our grad program) will usually go to candidates with a 70%+ average in the penultimate and ultimate year of study (of engineering)"

Also, after speaking to a few friends employed as graduate engineers, the general consensus is that you just need a few H1s in tough subjects to show you are a capable applicant. They don't care much about consistency across all subjects.

Take the subject 'control systems', ~65% fail rate for first-time students.  If you just P this first time, you're better than 45% of students who took it, who the hell cares if you got a low-grade in Linear Algebra in first year by comparison?

So my plan is to do well in the subjects that I intend to continue with in 2nd and 3rd years, and not try as hard to do well in my breadth/less important subjects. I seriously can't be arsed to study 24/7 a day to get good marks across the board. Would this be detrimental to my career prospects? And what do you mean by which institution I intend to apply for?

On the subject of GPA and grades, does the Masters of Science accept anyone with > a 65% average? I know it's unpopular in comparison to honours, but I'm a little curious (just in case my ability to brain takes a nosedive by the end of fourth year).

Some streams require you to have a supervisor before you begin (such as physics), but in general if you have an H3 or better average in your major you should be fine.

In the "Access Marks" page of the Calculus 2 LMS, I received a '*' for my assignment 2 grade, what does that mean? :P

An electrical engineering subject (3rd/4th year usually) that deals with the control and stablization of systems (to the best of my knowledge). It's core to Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering as well in the MEng.

does 1st year matter a lot. A made a big mistake choosing the bio engineering stream in biomedicine. Maths is not enjoyable at uni- for me that is.

It depends on how much you value your GPA / marks. If you need a high GPA for Med or whatever, it only counts for 16.66% of your 3 year GPA.

Don't worry I definitely agree on the maths part. Loved it in vce, now I despise it. :(

Same here. I think the classroom environment made it more enjoyable as well as getting to know the teacher. In uni it's just sitting in lectures and it feels so boring and dry lol
