Cool beans, that's pretty much what I thought. Though I did read somewhere (not sure where) that subjects taken during second year are worth twice as much as those taken during first year, but that sounds a little too good to be true.

I think that is for MD and DDS GPA :0
BSc (2015), MD1 (2016)

It is, but it's not particularly uncommon for later year subjects to be weighted more heavily in looking at marks.

I'm pretty sure it's just the average of all your scores. I haven't read anywhere that Level 2 subjects are worth more than Level 1 subjects or anything like that.

Where are you applying to go on exchange? :D I am finishing up my application for Manchester Business School

I read somewhere that the split is 1:2:4 for the three years which gives you a total of 7.0 max
2012
Mathematical Methods (50) Chinese SL (45~52)

2013
English Language (50) Chemistry (50) Specialist Mathematics (49~54.9) Physics (49) UMEP Physics (96%) ATAR 99.95

2014-2016: University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Science, Diploma in Mathematical Sciences (Applied Maths)

2017-2018: Master of Science (Applied Mathematics)

2019-2024: PhD, MIT (Applied Mathematics)

Accepting students for VCE tutoring in Maths Methods, Specialist Maths and Physics! (and university maths/physics too) PM for more details

I think you might be talking about the GPA? That sounds about right if that's what you're referring to.

Weighted average (as far as I know, for the purposes of exchange applications) is just the average of all units regardless of levels.

Say that my grades in first year were okayish but not ideal for exchange applications but my grades in second year are significantly better (i.e. much better than what's required for a particular exchange program) and my weighted average then just about equals the requirement, do you think they'd take my first year grades very seriously?

From what I've been told from the mobility staff, there are more places available for exchange than there are applications. So they'll look at your average over all units that you've completed (regardless of first year, second year), and if that works out to be 65% or more, you're eligible to go on exchange (as long as you meet the other requirements too). They have said that 65% is enough for you to go on exchange at least somewhere. To get into a more popular university, or one of the 'better' universities, you will need higher than 65% and this will vary with each intake.

I reckon you should still apply for exchange right now - it will mean that you will be studying overseas in semester 2 next year. It's a lot easier to study elective or breadth subjects in the partner universities, than it is to study subjects for your major (which might be the case if you send in an application next year). Major subjects have to be pretty much identical and equivalent to a major subject at UoM. You have until the 6th to submit it!

Hope this makes sense haha.

By the way, I think you might've been confused by WAM and GPA. For some strange reason, the uni often calls the WAM the GPA and vice versa.

I'm pretty sure the WAM is the average of results, while the GPA is the score on the 4 point or 7 point scale.

I really want to go to King's College or University College London or Queen Mary though which are going to require an average of 80 to be competitive, since London is quite popular and there aren't too many place. Which isn't impossible considering my grades from this year but it's very possibly I'm underrestimating the difficulty of the task haha. Hopefully if I can do really well in second year but I'm still just under 80 or just barely above they'll forgive my first year slacking. #wishfulthinking

This being said I've always found oddly that when I miss out on something and am forced to take an alternative route, the alternative turns out to be a better option, so we'll see!

Originally I was planning on going on exchange second semester of my second year, but since I'm planning on extending my bachelor course to four years (studying part-time in the fourth and working near full-time) anyway I've decided it'll be much better if I save up the money and go during the second semester of my third year and hopefully have a better experience. There are quite a few extra-curricular things I want to do in Melbourne next year, plus a bunch of second year subjects I really want to do at UoM.

I'm planning on taking three electives on exchange anyway (according to my current course structure) and only one major subject. I've already spoken to the English coordinator and he said it should be relatively easy to credit it to my BA. If not, I'll come back and do it in my fourth year.

Ahh I see! I reckon if you don't mind doing exchange semester 2 next year, you should still apply. Who knows, you might be able to get into one of those universities - the minimum average always fluctuates so I reckon you should try your luck!

Yeah I think you're right, even if only to practice going through the application process for next year! How'd you go about getting an academic reference?

Is there any way at all to tell in which semester a subject will be taught in 2015? The fluctuations, particularly in Arts, are quite a pain with regard to course planning.

I filled out my parts of the reference form and asked one of my tutors to write a reference for me - handed it in to her around a month or two ago. Hopefully she hasn't forgotten about it... she needs to submit the reference to the student centre herself.

Try to get one of your tutors, lecturers or an academic that knows you (well) to do it for you asap - not long to go! :)
