Hi,

I really want to go to Melbourne University and do a Bachelor of Arts but I'm not really sure what ATAR I'm capable of as I haven't fully applied myself in VCE as of yet. It says the clearly-in is 92.35 and the minimum is 85 ... Does that mean anyone who got above a 92.35 was offered a spot, and anyone below that who had it listed as their preference and was between 85 were randomly selected or something? How does this work?

I'm going to kick into first gear on Sunday and actually do some work for SACS etc. because I've let a few go and haven't done that well in them due to being lazy. If I were to get a 90 ATAR, how would it work?

I'm pretty sure it means anyone who got above 92.35 got offered a spot. I did absolutely sfa in year 11 and most of year 12, and I had a predicted ATAR of 82. But with some hard work before WACE I ended up with a flat 90, if you're kicking it up a gear already then you should easily get above 92

Minimum of 85 is one of those unique "snobbish" things about Melbourne. Since ATAR hurdles are based on Demand/Supply, Melbourne is basically saying that if there isn't enough "demand" from students who received ATAR of 85+; for Science in a particular year - it will only offer spots to the kids who did get over 85. Unless something drastic happens, the cut-off is not going to drop down to 85.

I believe only UNSW has a similar policy; and theirs is a blanket 80+ ATAR for all courses.

Monash has a 70 ATAR "floor" which is the same thing. Not really that snobbish considering that's the only criteria unis have to go on for submissions.

Last-minute additions are sadly quite common across the board. One of my subjects doesn't have -any information- up yet, let alone lecture slides :')

okay I see. I don't feel quite so guilty now about not printing them off yet before my 1st lecture on Monday.  :)

Melbourne has an ATAR guarantee for people with category 1 or 2 SEAS claims of 78 for science. I'm not a maths major, but pretty sure that's 7 less than 85...

Upvoted this simply because you used "sfa". Been a long time since I've heard that one hahah :D

Sorry, forgot to mention that seas is on a whole different grading scheme.

And im an economist, so we all deal with "relative" statements rather than numerical data. ^.^
Plus, the way i went in my macro class last semester, im also beginning to question my own maths skills as well.

My subject doesn't use the LMS and everyone spent the entire week wandering around not aware of whether classes had started or not because nobody told us.  Then they changed the timetable so it just says 'specially arranged venue' in all of the slots, and nobody knows where that actually is.  The handbook lists entirely different assessment to what was implied on the first day.  I think classes start March 18 but god only knows.

I LONG FOR MY DAYS OF UNDERGRAD.

Isn't Honours still technically undergrad?

For Arts yeah but when you're in an 'institute' like mine you're not really treated as undergrad...you're a member of the department.  It is 'technically' undergrad but it isn't really.  Arts is diff because it's more coursework less research.

It's roughly +3 or +4 on one particular post that's required to get a +1 on your profile. To help you along, I've given you a +1 for your post. :)
