There is nothing worse than leaving a test and knowing with certainty that you answered something wrong, especially when it comes to you after you leave.
Cell Biology made me label a diagram from a corner of one of the CAL pages and describe a type of microscopy I'd never seen and now I'm terrified of future assessments and will take every tiny detail to heart ;;;
LIFE SCIENCES ARE TOO SPECIFIC FOR MY VAGUE INFP BRAIN

How are other people finding the sudden influx of assessments?

Can anyone recommend winter breadths for a BSc student? All of the fun ones are level 4. I want the subject on punitiveness :'c

From what I've heard, Forests in a Global Context is pretty good (and easy to do well in).

I want to crawl in a hole and die.

But really, it's been a tough week dealing with assignments and stuff. Cannot wait for the easter holidays!

GHS Lecture 7: I don't understand this disease mapping shizzle. Any plz explain like I'm 5...

My understanding is that there are millions of these SNPs that we know about in the human genome. When a recombination event occurs near a known SNP site, we know which grandparental chromosome-part... that the offspring has inherited. We look for similar looking DNA sequences that might be the location of the disease causing gene.... that correlate between affected parent and child...

So is the point of dna mapping to get a region, belonging to a particular grandparental chromosome which hopefully carries the disease causing gene?

1. we look for snp sites that are the same between the affected child's genome and the affected parent's genome
2. then we look for dna sequences around these snp sites that correlate between the affected child and parent
3. we find the location -> this location is implied to carry the disease causing gene, although we don't know 100% where it is

because we know recombination takes place we can know which grandparental chromosome part is being passed down

Would totally help you with the mapping problem but I was on buzzfeed during that lecture

Thanks babes! For a moment I hesitated as it's different to my usual interests, but there's a quota AND no exam? It has to be amazing. And it's a golden opportunity to make LeviLamp jealous. Plants, LeviLamp. Plants. I'm going to be in a goddamn forest, PSSSSYYCH.

Life hack: in the handbook, look for classes that are  2 lectures a week rather than 3. I've almost sort of kinda caught up @__________@ like I won't be anymore in a few days, but for now, now I can lie on my floor and  drool

Yeah DNA mapping you wanna work out the location of the gene on the chromosome. You can look for SNPs in affected and control groups and see if either has an excess or deficit which is presumably associated with the disease. So if the affected group has an excess then the SNPs in those regions are probably close to the gene of interest as they are inherited together (no/low recombination so they must be close). If we know the gene of interest is between two markers then we can narrow down the location.

It's 6:42 AM, Monday. ok yeah no longer caught up.

Unpopular opinion: Carte Crepes don't taste nice :'c I've had them on two separate occasions and each time the pancake was floppy, spongy and bland. The thinly spread, sparse filling was sickly sweet and boring; it tasted like they purchase their ingredients from IGA (I love you IGA, but not in my crepe). I watched them make the crepes and the food still tasted like it had been sitting on a shelf for 12 hours.

My body is ready for downvotes

I got a letter from the Arts faculty about making the 2013 Deans List today! :D

I hate figuring out the dress code for these things ... For anyone who's ever been before, what does 'smart attire' mean? Suit up?

Congrats marr! :)
Do all Deans invitations come out at the same time? I'm curious to see what was needed for BSc 2013 Deans! :)

Wear a shirt and dress pants (and suit jacket if you have one). You can get away with dark jeans, but best just to suit up.
