hey guys, another jaffy type question.

this is regarding BIOL10004 again.

The recommended pre-readings say Chp16 pp358-335. This obviously makes no sense, and page 335 is not even in chapter 16.

So my question is, should I read the specific pages that the lecturer has set as prereadings, or should I read that entire chapter.

eg, if it says pages 40-50, which is in chapter 2, but chapter 2 is pages 38-54, should I read all the chapter or only the recommended pre-readings?

and what do you think the lecturer means when he says chp16 pp358-335?

Thanks in advance.

For starters, if the error is for every set of pre-readings then its likely they are referring to a different edition of the textbook.  Make sure you have the right one.
Secondly, a little common sense and looking at the lecture notes for the upcoming lecture will probably tell you whether you should refer to the chapter reference or the page numbers (if there is indeed an error).  Clearly if the lecture is about mitosis and you are being directed to read something about the citric acid cycle then you're probably doing it wrong.
Probably you and whoever wrote the references are talking about a different edition of the text.  Or it's a typo.

thanks for the response.

I just checked, I have the latest edition of the book and the lecturer is referring to the version i have :)

Well, it's actually quite funny. Its about xylem and phloem, but they are in page 351, which is prior to the pages that the lecturer has set.

but anyway, thank you for the help

Thanks so much for your detailed reply! :D I'll definitely keep it on the cards for now but I think I also need to look at other subjects too in order to make a fully informed decision. :)

yw! If you're aiming for perfection it might be best to take MBB1-2 first. But H1s are definitely feasible if you haven't.

I can expand on how 2nd year psych subjects are tomorrow when I get proper access to my laptop but Ballerina sums it up quite nicely. Also, the Developmental Psychology exam isn't all multiple choice, there's an essay component as well.

Oh wow, and developmental is already a bit challenging! For me, personally. It seems to depend on the individual, but more people I've asked find bio psych and cog psych the difficult ones, developmental psych in the middle, and personality/social considerably easier. I actually found developmental the most difficult in first year due to Judi's analysis-based approach (which is great).

I don't think doing MBB1 or MBB2 is all that beneficial for 2nd year psych subjects but I guess it gives you a general idea of what psychology is about and the types of concepts you'll be learning. Off the top of my head there's not too much that builds from the first year subjects other than a bit of quantitative methods and learning how to write lab reports. It's fairly easy to catch up on though, especially if you're mathematically minded. Ballerina's right though, if you dislike academic writing then 2nd year psych subjects might not be for you as a good chunk of your grade is from a lab report (40%+ varying in different subjects). If you had to take a first year psych subject though, I'd take MBB2.

From personal experience:
- In terms of difficulty: developmental > cognitive > biological > P&S
- In terms of my grades: biological > developmental > P&S > cognitive
- In terms of enjoyment: P&S > biological = cognitive > developmental

I actually have the grade distributions from Developmental and Biological psychology from last year if anyone is interested:

PSYC20008 Developmental Psychology
H1 -22.21%
H2A - 21.72%
H2B - 25.28%
H3 - 14.91%
P - 14.42%
(Fails were not included)

PSYC20006 Biological Psychology
H1 - 22.53%
H2A - 18.62%
H2B - 18.78%
H3 - 18.15%
P - 21.28%
(Fails were not included)

I don't have the results for Cognitive or Personality & Social Psych, but I would imagine they would be similar.

I hope that's helped you! Psychology is terrific to study and I'd highly recommend taking a few of the subjects as breadth if you're interested.

What sort of marks would be competitive for a transfer into BA or BSc from BEnvs?

Are you looking for mid year transfer or end of year transfer? For mid year transfer they look at your ATAR with your uni average. So if you got a good enough ATAR and have a decent average (say in the 70's or so), you are likely to get in.

Friend transferred into BSc from BEnvs with ATAR in the high 80's (he wanted to do BSc but didn't get in the 1st/2nd VTAC rounds) but had an average at uni of a little bit under 75. Mind you, this was end of year transfer since his ATAR wasn't enough.

Ideally mid-year but it might be tough because my atar was only 90 (Science - 92 Arts 92.35) so if I get an H2A average that will hopefully be enough for end of year.

I think if you got 90 and your average is around 75 then you should be able to get in :) Just do your best and see what happens.

I'm planning to do P&S as an elective next semester so this is extremely promising!

I ate a Lindt bunny today and I proceeded to get heart palpitations, a sugar crash and I needed to nap (I never nap) and now I feel like I've been poisoned. I'm getting old :(
