I just had my rat dissection today and my rat had an abnormality in which the smell was even more intense than usual and the kidneys were extremely enlarged. The supervisors all seemed to be talking about it but they didn't tell me anything and got me to just use one of the supervisor's mice. I'm a bit concerned - I know the rats are supposed to be disease-free and all but what if mine wasn't? I don't want to get infected or anything. :S

There are a very, very, very tiny number of diseases that humans share with rats (though wasn't it a mouse dissection? same goes anyway). Furthermore, there are plenty of diseases that can cause those kind of symptoms that have nothing to do with a pathogen.

Although I will make the point, Alon, they don't actually allow us to wear gloves :| Well, we can bring in our own, but the university refuses to supply any for dissections, nor do they warn students before their first dissection.

If it's not pathogenic I'd hedge my bets either on CKD, with the underlying cause being PCKD or diabetes mellitus OR AKI with crush syndrome, which wouldn't be too much of a stretch given the conditions of mouse breeding.

Well that's just silly. At Monash, you're not expected to bring your own gloves and that's the way it should be #monashmasterrace. I imagine that it's a cost-saving measure by UoM but it still seems stupid to compromise on safety, especially during a dissection of all things.

You'll be fine Stick, they took it because they wanted the cool rat for themselves (this is what I would do, hence why I know lol).

You're hedging with crush syndrome and CKD from diabetes  :o

AKI from crush OR CKD, both make sense in terms of swelling and putrefaction in the affected organ (I think, anyway).

They claim it doesn't change anything because they're quarantined and that students are just being sooks demanding them. #1 :|

Bueller? Bueller?
As much as I appreciate the reference I think you might not be asking the question in the board that's going to get you the most responses.
