A major is basically a specialised area within a course. For example, at UoM, the arts degree has various majors ranging from languages such as Spanish and Italian to more social studies related majors, such as Philosophy and History. Most people choose one or 2 majors, dependng on their interests(at least that's how it is at UoM, not sure how it works at other universities.)

Glad I'm not part of the #monashmasterrace

Every unit I've ever done, other than biochemistry, has been fantastic so no complaints from me!

Except maybe biophysics, but at least the exam was okay.

Economics
Handbook Link: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21B-ARTS-MAJ%2B1013

This is the closest you're going to get to Business, as straight Business is only offered in BCom (and sounds very very vague).

Be warned you have to do Introduction to Mathematics because you haven't done Methods, and then you will have to do Quantitative Methods 1 as part of the major.

This is a question from a past Quantitative Methods exam
(Image removed from quote.)

and here's a bit of the formula sheet
(Image removed from quote.)

If maths isn't your strong suit then this might be a bit of a challenge.

List of all BA majors can be found here, and course structure here

I am just going to say this. Just because you have a bunch of summation notations, sigmas and means in a formula it does not necessarily equate to extremely difficult Mathematics. If Maths isn't one's strong point then it may look like a bunch of random letters. Nevertheless, with careful study and with an understanding of notation the aforementioned Mathematics is doable by most people. Perseverance is they key.

I'm with Espoir. A little bit disingenuous to throw formulae that look difficult and claim that the maths is necessarily difficult. It's not. All this would require would be punching in numbers into those formulae and having a basic idea of how they work.

I would have loved that question in my stats exam last year  ;D It's actually quite easy once you know the stuff. But to the untrained eye it would look terrible. I dont think it was fair putting it up to demonstrate what a subject is like

On another note, does anyone know if it is as cold for the noon exam session as it is in the morning in the REB? I remember my fingers being frozen in them morning exams last year and it being ok in the late afternoon but not sure about mid day.

I was going to make this post but laziness stopped me. The maths in first and even second year economics and econometrics is pretty basic and it's taught very well. The uni economic department also offers supplementary maths classes so if you really want to do it don't let the seeming difficult of the math put you off.

Fair call, I'm sure you get taught how to do it in a straightforward manner but to me it's the equivalent to hieroglyphics! I did alright in 3AB maths back home and I think that JonoCP might have an issue with it considering his current maths grade of 22%.

Having said that it would still be worth having a go because economics is (in my opinion) the best BA major to go with.

Well, that is certainly understandable. Ultimately, it is the decision of Jono which major suites him the best. However, I'll also add this. Economics is a very fascinating field and although the Maths may seem tedious and all, it can prove to be very enjoyable. I feel that there is this consensus that Statistics is not all too fun, but if you sit down and have a read of where the formulas come from then it becomes very enjoyable.

My word of advice Jono: if you have an interest in Economics and are frightened by your ability, then fear not. As charmenderp mentioned, there are support classes for you to attend and get a deeper understanding. If you keep at it, it'll all come to you at one point and then the Maths will be second nature.
