Yea i don't understand why people do Biomedicine... It is literally just a more restricted and confined version of Bach of Science. There is no tangible benefit to choose biomed over science. I guess it's all about the prestige factor or their nagging parents!

I picked it since I thought it would offer a more integrated experience (which it does). I mean, if I had done Science, I would have picked similar subjects anyway. What I didn't realise is that the course structure probably needs a bit more work. That being said, I certainly don't regret my decision so far.

MCB? HSF? M2M? Frontiers? 4 subjects not available to Science. MCB is by far the best subject I've done to date, both in terms of co-ordination and breadth (covering 5 topics from biochem to immuno which you simply cannot do in Science - you'd have to take 5 separate subjects). Not saying Science is bad, but taking Biomed does have "tangible benefits", not just prestige factor...

Poor argument since you can't' do the Science equivalent of those subjects either.

PHYS20008 which isn't available to Biomed is by far the best subject i've done to date. I also prefer BCMB since it's not a mish mash of everything...

I beg your pardon? o.O Why would I want to do the Science equivalents when it's covered by my subjects?

Lol. that's the point dude.

You listed subjects that i can't do in Science. Well there are subjects you can't do in Biomed either.

This isn't a "benefit", it's a point of difference.

Not my point. MCB gives you a taste of 5 subjects. Science you'd have to take 5 separate subjects - very difficult to study plan that. Also, if a student really was into BCMB and not happy with just 2 weeks of MCB Biochem, they could always take the major and/or selectives. Anyways, we'll just be going in circles...was just saying it's more than "prestige" - there are other factors to taking Biomed over Science.

Okay will be my last post. As already addressed by others, some feel like MCB is just a mish mash of things that don't really have focus but trying to cram different topics together.

This is a point of difference dude. BCMB which isn't available to biomed offers 'different' things to MCB that you won't learn in MCB either. I'm guessing we go into much more detail if we don't cover immunology.

People finishing year 12 don't choose biomed over science because of MCB over BCMB anyways...the point is mute.

With all that said, we do get quite badly screwed over by MCB. Though we've "technically" done all of the prereqs, we really haven't. Once you get to third year, every biomed has to do catch-up on material that they just haven't been able to learn in MCB. So whilst like everyone in Biomed, I certainly appreciate the fact that we get to try out things, we're also a little bit fucked when it comes to third year.

Personally, I chose biomed over science because I thought the cohort would be encouraging (smaller and all slightly insane) and because I dreaded the idea of having to choose subjects; that shit's just too hard.

I changed my mind :) Let's all just agree that Biomed and Science offers different variations of the same things; given that you are not doing a major in science that isn't offered by biomed.

Here's one argument for biomed: for those who want to apply for med, the Monash Gippsland postgrad med course is now only allowing science students from Monash or people with recognised biomed degrees to apply. Every other course must be considered separately.

Yeah but...but health informatics is totally worth it.

Looking back, here were the reasons why I chose Biomed:

-I was going to do roughly the same subjects anyway - I was pretty much set on biosciences, so if I picked Biomed I wouldn't have to worry about all these pre-reqs shenanigans
-Smaller cohort, which is more driven and competitive (which helps to boost motivation...but also disappointment if you keep comparing yourself to other people)
-The notion of 'integrated core subjects' (which did NOT happen in 1st year at all. MCB was fkn brilliant but next semester HSF is a trainwreck apparently. I'm not too sure about the 3rd year capstones but apparently they're decentish?)

In the end there is not much difference between the two degrees. Biomed cores allow you to learn more broadly on different areas, but the Science/Selective subjects will go more in-depth simply because there's more lectures dedicated to them. A lot of people choose Biomed presumably because it's the "pre-med" pathway. I have yet to bump into someone who did the degree because of prestige.

I didn't want to do BSc or BBiomed, I wanted to go to beauty school

I still want to drop out and enroll in beauty school
