Edit: I did start researching what provisions there are if you fail a subject after I enrolled in biochemistry :'D

Biochem is not that bad, just give it your best shot! :) Sometimes our minds are our own worst enemies.
2012-2014. BSc: Neuroscience. University of Melbourne.
2015-2018. Doctor of Optometry. University of Melbourne.

Unlikely to respond to any PMs these days.

If you don't try and cram it into two days of the exam period, and learn Irene Stanley's section inside and out, you'll probably do amazingly. It's really not that bad, I didn't heed either of those two pieces of advice and it still turned out OK. Everyone I know got 70+, including someone who got 51 in Chemistry 2 ;)

"Additional Assessment
Occasionally, and only in the case of an extremely close fail grade, you may be offered Additional Assessment by your School/Faculty.  The following conditions apply (please refer to the Assessment Procedure);

Failure in the subject (other than a research project or thesis) has a significant effect on course progression

You have achieved a grade of 45% or more (not applicable if you have failed a hurdle requirement because you did not submit a piece of work), and

You may be awarded a maximum grade of 50% as a result of Additional Assessment.

Students do not apply for Additional Assessment, but are instead offered Additional Assessment by their Faculty/School.  Please note that, due to the strict conditions involved, most students who fail a subject are not awarded Additional Assessment."

Awwwwh thank you for the encouragement guys <3 I'm just not a fan of abstract stuff. I'm going to ignore my other 3 subjects and focus on biochem. THAT WILL WORK OUT.

Haha would accept, I need to go on campus soon to pick up free knitting needles and wool from the women's room, and check out what freaky psych experiments I can participate in at Redmond Barry. GOING TO SPEND THE ENTIRE HOLIDAY KNITTING JUMPER FOR COLD KITTENS<3

It does sound precarious, but you're so close to 50. Maybe if you don't get an email soon, email/call them to chase it up and see what you can do to try and slip in for additional assessment? Like proof of payslips/med certificates/whatever. It would probably help if the class has a medium-high fail rate as well.

Nooooooooooo you are not fucked at all! If you've failed 50%, you will be asked to attend a progress meeting http://umsu.unimelb.edu.au/need-help/advocacy/unsatisfactory-progress/

And apparently the outcomes are

"POSSIBLE OUTCOMES
The Course Unsatisfactory Progress Committee may:

Apply conditions to your enrolment or subject selection; or
Suspend your enrolment for a finite period of time; or
Terminate your enrolment.
You may be allowed to continue in your course with no restrictions, but the CUPC may also recommend actions for you to take, including getting support from Academic Skills, Counselling, or Disability Liaison. While these are only recommendations, it is in your best interest to take the advice of the committee as failure to do so may impact future decisions if you are required to attend a CUPC meeting again"

It sounds like this is your first time with this encounter, so odds are they'll probably just apply conditions. Which means you have lots of time left in your degree to boost your GPA. So there's still lots of hope! I'm sure lots of people on AN would like to be your friend, half of my uni friends are from AN :'D I LOVE YOU INTERNET WEIRDOS.

Apparently clubs and societies are great for socialization and making friends as well, which is precisely the reason why I avoid them.

If this is your first time failing subjects, it is highly unlikely they'll suspend/terminate enrollment. I have lots of friends who failed subjects (including core subjects, like QM) and they're still happily enrolled full-time. Failing subjects is not uncommon at all. Whenever they include the class statistics during the first lectures of the semester, many of my subjects had 20-30% fail rates.

I'm not a UoM student and therefore not an authority by any means on their academic standards requirements, but I reckon it's highly, highly unlikely that your enrolment would be terminated because of one poor semester. Usually at universities like UoM or Monash enrolments are only terminated for A) severe or repeated behavioural or academic misconduct (which isn't relevant to you at all) or B) a repeated inability to take on board suggestion made to a student by the Progress Committee, or blatant, deliberate or unexplained poor standards in academic pursuits.

Given your reaction, I'd bet that this is the first semester where you've got results such as these; ergo I am 100% sure that your enrolment is safe. As above, termination is almost exclusively reserved for 'repeat offenders'.

A couple of suggestions:
  • IF you are summoned to a progress meeting, make sure you let them know about any mitigating factors or events that may have occurred during semester that may have impacted upon your ability to perform at a high standard. If you can show the university that some things were out of your control, you basically don't have a case to answer to.
  • IF you are provided with some suggestions and recommendation by this committe, take them on board. Not only does it show the university that you truly value your enrolment and that this semester was an anomaly, but the suggestions themselves are also designed to get the best out of you when implemented.

Good luck! I'm certain you'll be fine :)

I think if you do that it just transfers the same posts into this thread, which was the problem to begin with.

All you Psych kids - how much prereq knowledge would be needed to do well i.e. high H1 in Personality and Social Psychology? Anyone have any recommended study (that I'll probably never but it's the thought that counts) for someone who's never done psych before?

If I was too keen and wanted a head start to Human Physiology, would it be useful to listen to the 2014 semester 1 lectures or would it be a waste of time? ie is the content for semester 1 and semester 2 identical?
