Ah yes, just read it on their site. It's for 2015 only to help with the transition from MBBS to MD.

Deakin only offers post-grad medicine, not undergraduate, so people in Year 12 would really only talk about Monash and the like.

Melbourne only has 188 CSP spots and 64 BMP spots so most people in Biomed (and Science) won't get in and will have to either take other degrees, take gap years or do Honours. I think with USyd and UQ, Melbourne has the highest cut-offs.

There are also spots at other universities, with the number of spots ranging from 90 (Monash) to 308 (in USyd). Most of them have around 120ish spots, so

Sad :(((((

So out of the 500 of so students that get into Biomedicine every year AND the hundreds of other students doing "medicine" through Science, how many of these people will end up doing actual medicine?

And if you don't get in, do you keep trying and trying until you do?

And how come I see people talking about Deakin for medicine now? I never really heard Deakin and medicine mentioned together while I was in year 12 [only Monash and Melbourne]?

Ummm it's actually a really tough question to answer because numbers fluctuate and it's probably quite hard to track where all the students go (some go melb, some go sydney and so on).
Yes, you keep trying unless you go insane or find something better to do.
Deakin doesn't offer Undergrad med but they have a MBBS program in Geelong.

Fuark dude. Do those spots take account of the Chancellors etc? I guess the difference with Melbourne is that they look at the GPA/GAMSAT combo whereas UQ and USyd have GPA hurdles and GAMSAT cut offs. As a result, their gamsat cut offs are higher (71 for CSP guaranteed at UQ in previous years and 69 for Interview for USyd this year :O)

They gave the stats for BSc and Biomed to UoM Med at one of their random presentations last year and it was pretty high when they showed it. Not so much for Science students obviously because a substantial # in the course want to do something other than med, unlike Biomed in which nearly everybody wants to get in to medicine

I think there were about 5200 applications for med this year and only about 2200 or something received interview offers. Idk how many will receive actual offers.

Anyone done: Thinking Scientifically SCIE20001 before?

Can you tell me what it's about and if it's hard? There isn't a review on it yet.

And what do you guys mean by honours? Is that just a year of research? Or are there classes/subjects for "honours" students?

It's a year of research

It looks easy, but I don't enjoy writing essays and things of that nature, so I am a bit reluctant to pick it next year.

So some people who get turned down for the MD keep trying until they are accepted/find something else to do? If so then that's incredible that people have the drive for so long to continue studying in hope they will get a spot.

That's about what I heard from a biochemistry lecturer of mine last year - it's pretty insane, yeah.

And what do you guys mean by honours? Is that just a year of research? Or are there classes/subjects for "honours" students?
It depends on the course and the university. I have friends doing honours in social sciences and they have a substantial amount of coursework as well (up to half - or more - of the year.) In science it's heavily weighted towards a research project, but most departments have some minor coursework (biochemistry is 75% project 25% coursework.) Some universities have 100% research.

BSc (Hons) 2015 Melbourne

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

I want to be an architect.

Nope, they don't take into account chancellors so in reality the number of CSP offers is a bit lower. I'm not too sure how many chancellors there are though, there could be 20-30 for all we know.

so that didn't even make FFP? Nuts

also dent is right up there now

Chances are most people don't bother applying for FFP in the first place, when they could potentially get CSPs/BMPs at other unis

So some people who get turned down for the MD keep trying until they are accepted/find something else to do? If so then that's incredible that people have the drive for so long to continue studying in hope they will get a spot.

There are people on pagingdr who have sat the GAMSAT multiple times (3-4 is not uncommon) and have tried to get into a school for years. Some apply while they're working full-time or even when they have children as well.
