Did I just screw up? I have no clue what I'm going to do for Semester 2 this year (second year) so I only planned out my first semester (with a subject I'm thinking of swapping out for another anyway). The website says I need to enrol for both semesters. Am I going to incur a fee?

Don't think so, heard from somewhere that you only need to enrol into 2 subjects for the year ?

Not sure though, remember reading/hearing it somewhere.

Thanks for the advice on the diaries. I was reading the orientation page, and it said something about a 'winter recess'. What is this? Thanks :)

Just a fancy way of saying end of semester one holiday.

It's worth enrolling in at least six (three per semester) so you count as a full time student for PT concession purposes.

You can enrol in a subject freely until week 2 of semester. No need to stress.

If I followed this course structure (the Diploma being in Languages) with the intention of doing a graduate degree, what would I be doing 4th year 2nd semester? Do graduate courses even have semester 2 intakes?

Nothing wrong with taking a semester extra so you finish with everyone else.

Some grad programs have semester 2 intakes, although they are the exception irrc.

Also not a bad idea if you under load on exchange.

Lol, me and like five other people sat in a lecture theatre for a good ten minutes until I realised that Finance 1 begins next week, not today. The damn internal facepalm man.

Hey guys, just a quick question: I am going to do a DipLang in Arabic at UoM this year, but wanted to know whether there are any form of exchange program that is offered by the uni in which Arabic knowledge, both culturally and linguistically speaking, can be enhanced?

As far as I know, there is the opportunity to do a subject in Oman (note: this is not an official Arabic subject-it is an Islamic Studies subject) in 3rd Year.

Note sure about exchanges. Unfortunately Arabic universities aren't faring so well at the moment. If you only want to do it for the language, I'm not sure it's worth it. Jordan is probably your best bet, or the American University in Beirut. Unfortunately Cairo is slightly 'off-limits' at the moment. There would have been some good places to go there.

You would have had better luck in the 9th Century (!), when Arab-speaking countries were producing most of the great scientisits/mathematicians/philosophers.

Ah that's shit. I just don't see me being able to become competent in a language without an exchange.

It's probably not the same, but Arabic is an official language in Israel and most of the universities there offer courses in Arabic at various levels (for example the Arabic Intensive Program at Tel Aviv University or the Arabic Immersion Program at Hebrew University).

Both look fairly expensive, but the diplomatic situation and getting a student exchange visa should be a bit easier to manage than certain other countries.

just recieved an email about quotas in one of my subjects, and how I need to "enroll" into it before the deadline.

Is enrolling into the subject the same as putting it into my study plan?

When I click "Current Enrolments > Enrolment Details", I can see that particular subject under the heading "Listed below are the subject(s) that you are currently enrolled in for your Study Plan", am I fine?

ALSO, that particular subject is highlighted green in my study plan

As long as your enrolled in the subject, you should be fine. There's nothing more you can do.
