It's the 3rd GHS test you should be worried about (the one on law etc). Even with the slides on hand the questions were pretty ambiguous.

How are the MSTs for CHEM10006 and BIOL10002? I'm going over lecture slides and tute questions for chem so I'm hoping that will be enough since that's the subject I'm least confident in

That's definitely sufficient preparation.

If I recall correctly the CHEM10006 ones are only worth 2% each so you should do a little study but otherwise just use it to see how you're progressing.

BIOL10002 isn't too bad either, but most people feel like they could have done a bit better. It's because you don't really have a feel for the level of detail required yet - anything that appears on a slide is technically examinable, although eventually you'll develop a bit of a filter to figure out what is superfluous information (depending on the subject, some tables are merely used for demonstrative and breadth of content purposes, and are not really to be memorised).

Good luck! :D

What double major are you doing? I didn't think it was possible to double major with Actuarial Studies...

I'm doing a double major of Economics+Finance. It's possible to get a double major with Actuarial Studies, since you only need three of the six 3rd year Actuarial subjects to get the major, but you won't get full professional accreditation.

What made you drop out of Actuarial Studies?
Yeah I heard that economics/finance is the second most popular option, with accounting/finance being most popular. But there wouldn't be much point doing an Actuarial major if you weren't going for all ayour part 1 exemptions.

Personally I found the material pretty boring. The maths was okay, but the theory was mind-numbingly dry. Having looked at the 2nd year Actuarial subjects, my opinion didn't change much. Economics and Finance are pretty interesting to me, they sort of give that balance of theory and application whilst still having the strong quantitative component.

Also, with the small number of actuarial graduate spots, I figured that I shouldn't put myself through all the trouble of an Actuarial major(arguably the hardest major) when a Economics/Finance major potentially opens many more doors in the financial services industry.

The people I meet doing double majors with Actuarial Studies are mainly Actuarial/Finance majors. But you're right, you won't be getting Part I exemptions at the university and would need to sit external exams if you want the full Part I's.

Former GENE20001 students: How difficult is the first mid-semester test? I seem to be able to do the questions, but they take me considerably longer than the suggested time allocation. Will this be a problem? I'd hate to open up the test and then feel flustered and have my arms waving around in panic. XD Also, it says that they recommend us sitting the test at a university computer... How necessary is that? If it is, which computers can I go to in order to sit the test?

Many thanks. :)

It's not too bad, if you can understand the practise questions then you're good to go. There were like maybe 1-2 trick questions on it though, which a lot of people tripped up on. Can't really remember what it asked.

Well if you do the test on Uni Wireless and you get disconnected, then gg you'll have to email the coordinator because you'll be locked out. Hence it's a good idea to do it over a more secure connection. Just use one of the computers in Brownless or the ERC.

The chem10007 midtest says it takes 45minutes, but I'm quite slow with it so is it better to just try and answer everything or to go slower and do it properly?? It's only 3% but I need every one of those   ;)

Thanks. :) I've just finished all the 2009-2013 exams and I've had a bit of brainwave - it seems that they can't actually ask that many different questions and I'm starting to notice some patterns haha. Hopefully that means I get (a lot) quicker. XD

Best to find a balance between speed and accuracy.

I keep dropping a few marks here and there in my ILTs and MSTs. I hope they don't start adding up and then make it nearly impossible for me to get a H1 in the end :/

Dw mate, it's fine.

I had ~6/10 average for the 25% pracs (so 10% gone) and dropped marks in MSTs and assignments and managed to h1. If you're losing a few marks here and there it shouldn't matter too much ;)
