Watching the long line of first year Biomed students asking Gus questions in CHEM10006 really makes me pity them. Trust me, it'll get better.

Hmm I wonder if I've ever walked passed you after my lecture.

And yeah pretty much the whole cohort is lost for Chem. I'm starting to get more and more stressed as the exam gets closer and I get more confused with the content we're learning now. I take solace in that I only need to persevere for a few more weeks and I can forget about chem until GAMSAT  :-\

for those who have applied thru GEMSAS can you tell me how you can receive offers for BMP and FFP?

Do you apply for those specifically, i.e. apply for Unimelb Med FFP, or do they basically give FFP/BMP to those who did not make the cut off for the CSP places

When you fil out your application you just have to tick the boxes where they ask if you're interested in a BMP or FFP. And yeah if you're not high enough for a CSP you might get a BMP, and if you miss out on a BMP you'll get a FFP. If you don't tick those boxes saying you're interested then you miss out on both

but if i tick all 3 boxes, it still only counts as only 1 preference right?

Yeah. So you can't put your preferences like 1. CSP Melbourne 2. CSP Monash 3. BMP Melbourne etc. It will have to go like 1.CSP/BMP/FFP Melbourne 2. CSP/BMP/FFP Monash blah blah. If you tick all three boxes, you only get passed down to Monash if you fail to get a FFP

Ah, that actually helps a lot.

So really, I should put the university I am most likely to get into as my first preference.

Also, one thing, how likely is it that i get into my last preference?

Say, that I have a GPA of 6 and GAMSAT of 60, and my preferences are:

1, unimelb med
2, monash med
3, usyd med
4, UQ med
5, Deakin med
6, a very low ranking uni that basically has a guarantee entrance far lower than GPA 6 and GAMSAT of 60.

How likely is it that I get into my 6th preference?

You'd have to look at cut-off scores and a lot is dependent on interview too. But that combo wouldn't be high enough for most of the unis on that list (maybe you might just clinch into Deakin if you're lucky).

If you apply to portfolio unis (like UNDS, Wollongong), your application needs to also list all your extra-curricular involvement etc, so their GPA + GAMSAT scores are lower (but on the other hand you need to be a crazy volunteer lol).

Sydney is separate from GEMSAS so you apply directly to the uni itself.

Yeah actually, that was just an example actually.

By the way, I should mention that I qualify ås a rural student.

Oh thanks heaps about the USyd thing. is the USyd dentistry the same deal?

By the way has anyone taken a year off after they graduate and simply study for the uni + work? Did it work out?

Should I do that or do an honours/masters? if so, what masters would be good, I'm a BSc student with major in human structure & function (possibly biochemistry) [im only 2nd year]

As a rural student the requirements drop down quite a lot - you might be able to make it into Monash or more likely Deakin.

I can't answer your other questions though. You'd probably find better advice on PD.

Am I right in saying that Monash will only take Monash undergrad students from 2017 onwards?

I am in my second year now, so I will be applying for 2017 entrance.

Best quite/deserted study areas???
So far I've discovered:
  • top floor of the biomed library
  • ERC
  • MSD (best place to eat/drink and study)
:)

Giblin Eunson is good for sleeping but it's always full.

Yup, true. So you won't be able to apply for Monash - that would leave Deakin only.

There's a quiet "library"/computer lab that no one goes to but since not many know of its existence, that's why it's good heheh.

MSD is neither quiet not deserted!
Frank Tate is usually fairly quiet when I go. With that said, I only tend to go there late nights.
If you go up the stairs next to laby theatre (in the physics area) there's an area that's usually pretty quiet. There's a computer lab too.
Speaking of physics, the post grad lounge (I think it's level 5?) that's usually quiet and has a nice little kitchenette
The graduate lounge in the spot is also really nice.

Yeah I was gonna say, MSD is chockablock. You can generally get some place to yourself on the 2nd floor but it's pretty noisy (I've definitely contributed my fair share to this noise pollution >.<)
